Mr. Wow Blasts Perez Hilton | 05/01/2009 3:15 pm

A Practicing Omni-Sexual Weighs In on Miss California, Gay Rights and Perez Hilton

Mr. wOw vents about the brouhaha at the beauty pageant.
By Mr. Wow

Editor's Note: Mr. Wow writes upon occasion for wOw. He is the ultimate Hollywood insider who live-blogged Oscar night for us. Today he dropped in to stir it up a little. We're sure you'll agree he succeeded.

Mr. wOw wonders what blogger Perez Hilton really had in mind when he asked Miss USA contestant, Carrie Prejean, about gay marriage. And I wonder what he’s thinking now that it has all backfired.

The majority of beauty queens are Christian or Mormon or ... something else that does not believe in a woman’s right to choose or gay people getting married. And that’s fine for them. (Just as it’s fine for them to put plastic balloons in their chest cavities and sleep in cancer-causing tanning beds. One must suffer and die for hilariously artificial beauty.)

Perez had to know he was going to get some version of the answer he did -- “I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman.” She didn’t say everybody ought to believe as she does -- even if she thinks that. (We can’t censor what people think -- yet.) Miss California did use the phrase “in my country” when prefacing her remark on gay marriage, but also talked about “people having a choice” in America. Hmmm ... this came as a big surprise for the millions of gay Americans who don’t have a choice.

I think Miss California gave the best answer possible under the circumstances. She was startled; she doesn’t believe in gay marriage; and she's a beauty pageant contestant, for heaven’s sake! Ask her about saving the whales or world peace.

She didn’t win, perhaps because of her nix on gay marriage. Perez blogged viciously about her afterward, calling her a “dumb bitch” and the C-word; thereby conforming to every ugly stereotype about gay men vis-à-vis the female sex. Mr. wOw loves women. He is repulsed by this sort of attack.

Miss CA has gone on to turn lemons into champagne, a far bigger deal than she would have garnered had she won! And now, emboldened and insulted, she really is speaking out against gay marriage.

Every time Perez lashes out, she gets another speaking gig or spot on conservative TV or radio. They are giving her parades! She is the new heroine of the right -- a sweet, beleaguered, heavily painted Christian, being fed to those nasty gay lions.

Perez, you are helping this girl’s career, get it? (And putting a big grin on Donald Trump’s face, too. The Donald doesn’t give a damn about gay marriage one way or another, probably. He just loves the publicity this has generated for his pageant.)

If Perez felt he had to make a political statement, perhaps he could have worded it this way: “In the USA, convicted murderers on Death Row have the right to get married. Do you think law-abiding, tax-paying, gay American citizens should have the same rights as Death Row prisoners?”

Now, that might have stumped her for a minute. I know it silences dinner tables every time I say it.

Of course, I silence dinner tables every time I say Meryl Streep is overrated and over-honored, too.

Umm, did you actually read the whole article - or just snippets of it, here and there?

Dear Flex … Apparently you did not read my post all the way through. I think I made my position on gay marriage pretty clear in how I think Mr. Hilton should have framed his question. The fact is, Carrie P. was asked a question. She had not espoused her views on gay marriage to that point. Asked, she answered. And was then attacked in the crudest manner. (Unless you, Flex, feel it is OK to refer to women who don’t agree with you in similar manner?) Mr. Hilton is no champion of "the cause." Have you been to his website? Just being openly gay doesn’t automatically make one the proper advocate for gay marriage or any other related cause. He was deliberately provocative. So? This is 2009. Who isn’t? He has helped himself more than he has helped his gay brothers and sisters.

"Pissing off individuals who were her former audience"? Who? I don’t know too many gay men or lesbians who watch beauty pageants. Or too many straight people, either. It’s pretty much a dead issue, entertainment-wise. Of course thanks to Mr. Hilton, next year the Miss USA pageant will probably score higher ratings.

Indeed traditional marriage has its own set of unique values. But people — gay, straight, unsure — want to do it. They should, and suffer the joys and consequences. Mr. Wow is no religious zealot, believe me! But I am of a certain age, with medical issues. I am far more concerned with health care than if two people wish to vow their love and commitment "forever." What a basically foolish notion. "Forever" is for the movies. But, I admire all who try.

I am simply not into the current craze to fire and punish people who speak out, on the Right or the Left. Let them be hung by their own words, and leave them to heaven. Or hell. (I’m speaking of earthly heaven or hell. Mr. Wow thinks the other side is a big cocktail party where all are welcome.)

As for being tacky, lame and a D-lister, it is true I don’t even own a tuxedo. Mr. Wow gets by with jeans, and everybody knows my name.

My best to you, Flex Colby.

GEE FLEXWHO PEED IN YOUR CHEERIOS?  Religious Zealots?  If someone has read the Bible and actually comprehended it, that makes them a zealot?  As far as I’m concerned, there is so little happiness in this world that whatever or whoever brings that to you as long as its a healthy, respectful relationship, more power to you.  It’s your personal decision.  I happen to be hetero and cohabitate due to financial reasons.  If my sweetie and I marry, our children will have no chance of financial aid in college…so there are issues on all sides.  It’s about committment and respect anyway, so have a committment ceremony.  You need to let go of that anger your carrying around there, pal…that’s quite a bit of venom.  At the risk of sounding like a "zealot", which I’m not, but I am a Christian, you might want to just give it to God.

I’ve skipped over most of this saga until now, thanks for the cliff note version. Perez is Paris’ ?brother, cousin, nothing?

Connie, Perez is unrelated to Paris. "Perez Hilton" is a pen name that stuck.

I have to say that for once in his life Perez had the higher moral ground when he asked the gay marriage question. It was a legitimate, relevant question. Sure, Miss California has the right to her opinion. As a pagent contestant, she also has the right to be judged on her answer to political questions. It’s just too bad that Perez returned to his slime-ball ways immediately afterwards. He’s such a complete loser. It is sad and pathetic that he thinks of himself as some sort of gay rights actvists.

It was all good, Mr. Wow…….until I got to the part about Meryl Streep. You put my favorite actress down!

Mr. Wow
Oh, but that’s just my opinion.  Mr. Wow concedes he is in a minority here.  We think "Postcards from the Edge" was her greatest performance.  After that…dowhill.  But my critique means nothing, and shouldn’t affect your pleasure.  And—please don’t go postal, but—I recently watched "Sophie’s Choice" again.  I. Was. Not. Moved. To. Tears.  The accent made me crazy. (I kept thinking any minute she was going to ask after Moose and Squirrel.)  Mr. Wow cries more when deer in "The Yearling" is killed.  In fact, he become hysterical.  I don’t put down anyone who disgrees with me.  Certainly not on  the lightweight subject of favorite actress.   Best to you, Andrea.

Deena B.

Love the reference to moose and squirrel!  I recently heard someone on TV doing a cheesy Russian accent and remarked to my 14 year old "This means beeg trouble for moose and squirrel."  She had no clue what I was talking about….

I appreciate your ability to look at both sides of the Perez Hilton (and Meryl Streep) situation in a civilized manner - and inject a dash of humor in the process.  I am always willing to listen to and discuss other people’s opinions calmly.  I just cannot be bothered with people who go ballistic at the drop of hat.

Hope to read more from you again…soon.

Nice summary, Mr. Wow. And I agree in that "Postcards" was her best. However, given the limited competition by other good actresses, her other movies look better than perhaps they really are.

Moose and Squirrel - too funny.

Just a few things here;

Mr. wOw is absolutely right. Everyone, regardless of sexual orientation should have the right to "suffer the joys and consequences." of marriage. That alone makes it fair, lol.

Miss California…. has anyone even LOOKED at this girl?! She’s hideous. Overprocessed in every way and just like the rest of them, promoting the physical stereotype that so many are trying to fight against for the mental well-being of our normal young women. Anyone can starve themselves, spend hours in the gym, dye their hair blonde and live the rest of the time in the tanning bed. It’s not complicated, but it’s also an extremely inappropriate way to market oneself as a "role model" for girls, boys, religious zealots, whoever! I give her props because her answer was honest and that’s about where my support of her ends.

And Mr. Perez Hilton? REALLY?! Who in the H.E.Double hockey sticks had the brilliant idea that a gay blogger is qualified to even judge the Miss USA pageant? He’s a smut peddler with a flair for drama just like the rest of the paparazzi. I tried to find a source SOMEWHERE that said he had some form of pageant experience; hairdresser’s license, makeup training, costume appropriation…. NOTHING! He’s a publicity stunt. End of discussion.

R M is spot on. I too give Miss CA props for having her own opinion, but thats also where I draw the line. Why can’t women be REAL and not alter their bodies to fit what society wants? Honestly, I’d prefer to see a woman without fake hair, fake teeth, fake breasts, fake tan… If they want to be a role model for young girls now, be real. Show your flaws, don’t hide them.

As for Perez Hilton… yes, he’s just a publicity stunt. But He DID have the right to ask the question he did, as it pertains to society and life today. He may not have like the answer he got, and she could have prepared better for the question, but not everyone has the sheeple mentality.
