Rachel Maddow on 'The View': 'Smart' Rush Limbaugh and Being a 'Gay Desperate Housewife' (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
Rachel Maddow on 'The View' March 5

All the women on "The View" were on the couch with Rachel Maddow Thursday afternoon, questioning her on a mix of topics, including Rush Limbaugh, the economy, her partner — and coming out to her conservative parents. Here’s what she had to say:

On Rush Limbaugh: "I think that Rush is very successful and very smart, and the idea that the president would actually debate him is hilarious. The idea that I would ask somebody from the Republican Party … of course that would be great for me, but it would be stupid for any politician."

On the economy: "I think that we are in a pickle as a country," she said. "I think that the economic crisis is so much bigger than any of us can grasp. And I think that we need somebody with big ideas who’s willing to take big action … I think the budget’s a good budget, I think the stimulus plan is a good stimulus plan, I think we need to think big."

On meeting her partner Susan Mikula: Maddow explained that she and Susan met after Susan hired her to do some yard work when Rachel was working on her dissertation. The scene, she says, resembled a "sort of gay ‘Desperate Housewives,’" a reference to the ABC show on which Eva Longoria’s "Gabby Solis" romanced her gardener.

And of all the ladies on the show, Maddow sat next to Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Maddow, though, found a friend in the outspoken Republican. "You do an exceptional job," Hasselbeck said. "I think it’s important to recognize people who do a great job on both sides of issues."

Watch the video below — plus find out the unconventional way Maddow came out to her parents:

Whatever Rachel! She must be bipolar. I watch her show every night, and almost every night she trashes President Obama and his administration in regard to the changes (financially) he has in place. And yet she goes on The View and speaks of the need to ‘Think Big” which is exactly what he says he feels the need to do, yet she complains when he says it. What a crock!

Why does she always wear those glasses when she is a guest on a program? She doesn’t wear them on her show at least not the last time I watched.

You’re right.  She never wears her glasses on her own show but she always wears them as a guest on everyone else’s shows.  For whatever reason, MSNBC probably doesn’t let her wear them.   Maybe they think she looks too harsh or too butch with them on.  Who knows.

Now THIS has evolved into an interesting (albeit short) thread on Rachel’s appearance. It is a subject that is very true and makes for a complex conversation.

On one hand her show is a professional program in which she provides her take and spin on topical subjects and issues, primarily political. Like her counterparts Olberman and Matthews, she wears her business suit, wears a full face of make up (and usually false eyelashes) to present a more polished appearance.

Yet on the other hand she speaks constantly of being "herself" and true to who she is. When she appears on talk shows her hair is combed slightly different, she dons the eyeglasses, and dresses in a more "masculine" manner with the jeans and boys gym shoes.

Now… she could have chose to be the more natural Rachel and I believe her ratings would be just as high as they are now. People who are her loyal viewer would not find her natural style off pudding. I watch Morning Joe every morning (Republican Joe Scarborough) and he is almost always casual, laid back in appearance. Sometimes he dons glasses, sometimes not, sweaters, unbuttoned shirts, sweatshirts….he is almost always dressed on air as he is off air.

All four examples are on MSNBC, her cable station. She isn’t dressing more professional because she has to (look at Joe Scarborough). So what is it?

I think she’s utterly delightful.

i think she sounds like her mentor…Keith O….. and i can’t watch him at all. I think she could be good, but her cadence and speech pattern is very jolting. My opinion..that’s all!!

I think she is ANNOYING! Always bashing Republicans and their ideas. I watched her before the elections, but she was soooooo pro-Obama (as is MSNBC in general), so I just stopped watching MSNBC altogether. The fact that she is on the view looking "Butch" doesn’t interest me to watch the show.

Nancy…that is so very true…msnbc was a big turn off during the election…couldn’t stand any of them….kind of tune in to Morning Joe…but they are so fickled on there that you have no idea where they stand from one day to the next…it depends who their guest are to which way they flow!!  Maddow…can’t stand…her and keith are on the bottom of the ratings…even Larry King is above them…now that’s really saying something…imho

I listen to them all, I am a moderate.  If you only listen and think one side is right, that could be a mistake because no one is always right.  (Hey Libra Lady)

Hey Jules…how’s it going…haven’t chatted with you in awhile….anything new in the Anthony or Haley cases…haven’t watched Nancy in awhile….and you are right…no one is always right…will agree with you there…

Nancy has actually moved toward talking about other tragedies, but no I have not.  Last I heard the mother and father wouldn’t wouldn’t give testimony in the civil case, (no real surprise there).  Have not heard a word about the Haleigh case.  I do know that they let the people back into the home and removed the police tape.

But, have you heard the Nadya Suleman 911 tape from October?  Wow, she has got some real issues.  She couldn’t find her five year old and she was talking about killing herself, etc.  What does she think is going to happen when she is taking care of the 8 babies and the other kids WANT to disappear?

(Haven’t found a lot to respond to here, and I have been dealing with a lot of personal issues.  I have six kids, go figure.)

Jules…six kids keep you mighty busy…hope everything is going ok…..I did hear the Suleman tape…this woman really needs help…someone has to step in on this case and do something for all the children…I feel so sorry for them all….this story just gets worse each day.

I thought they had arrested a molester that they were looking for in the area on the Halegh case, but haven’t heard anything more about that.  The little boy who said he seen a black man come into the room didn’t sound too convincing to me…don’t know if he was coached into saying that or what….

Hope you are doing ok….

Six kids, five of which have significant others’ (because one of my kids is still only 12 years old), three grandkids and two more on the way as of (a text message) last night.  I need to be writing all this down because I can’t even begin to tell you the drama these kids create.  At the end of the year, with the two additional grandchildren, we will have 19 people in our immediate family.  That is so insane.

I stand corrected, I did hear about the molester and the black man.  Mostly things have been quiet.

I cannot tell you how sick I am about those 14 children being in the care and custody of this woman that seems so unstable that everyone knows it but no one wants to do anything until someone gets hurt.  That kind of philosophy is so inheritantly wrong I want to scream.

(Hope you are okay too. One day we should exchange email addresses.)

Jules…congratulations…two more grandchildren…that is exciting news…is that twins or two different children having babies?  Enjoy your huge family…I  do think we talked about that before….I bet holidays are such a joy with you all.  It would be fun to exchange email addresses…don’t know how to do it…but surely not on here…lol…

You hang in there….be so lucky you are a grandmother…My husband and I are still waiting to be grandparents….maybe someday….hope hope!!!

Well, congrats isn’t what I was looking for, but thanks.  There is sooo much more to this family story than I can say here.  Not twins, two different kids having babies.  I am excited about the grandbabies, inspite of my stepchildren and their problems.  However, they are all way too young and unprepared to be parents.  I did tell them that once they left our house, they were their own boss, I wouldn’t tell them what to do and I stuck to my guns on that one.

Yeah, we should find a way to exchange email addresses.  I will see if I can come up with something…
