Senator Arlen Specter on Howard Stern: I Passed Up Chance to Smoke Pot

Shock jock Howard Stern — known for his interviews of porn stars, as well as celebrities like Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, and Star Trek’s "Captain Kirk," William Shatner — had a much different kind of guest on his Sirius-XM satellite show Tuesday: Senator Arlen Specter.
The Pennsylvania Republican apparently has a huge fan in Stern, who vowed to endorse the senator and financially support his campaign. Specter has appeared on the show several times, but took time during his more recent visit to dish on Rush Limbaugh, his battle with cancer, and how he has never smoked pot.
"I was in Nepal en route and pot was legal in Nepal. I was sitting around the campfire [with] all the Peace Corps volunteers and they were smoking marijuana," explained the Senator. "And here was the chance to smoke marijuana legally and I turned it down … because I don’t want to submit my body to a temptation I might not be able to control."
Here’s a roundup of some of the juicier tidbits of the interview:
On working while undergoing chemotherapy, Specter said: "I started getting more mail about my hairstyle than about public policy … people wrote me to tell me to shave my head and become a sex symbol." Co-host Robin Quivers asked how he kept his mind on the job. He joked: "Sometimes your fellow Senators are more distracting."
Specter also said he thinks the Obamas have a "spicy marriage," and that it’s "too soon to tell" whether President Bush will go down as a "bad president." And with regard to everybody’s favorite topic, Rush Limbaugh, The Hill says Specter was asked if the "crackpot" conservative talk-show host is the head of the Republican Party. "I don’t think you can really identify with precision a leader," the senator said. "If you had to pick somebody, I think you’d pick Sen. [John] McCain [AZ]. He was the presidential candidate last time and until we have another one, I think that John’s the titular head of the party."
But Specter opted not to attack Limbaugh, saying he likes the at-times inflammatory radio host. "I never attack prominent radio personalities like Howard Stern or anybody else or people who buy ink by the barrel."

Man, I wish I had Sirius radio!
This will probably come as quite a surprise to some people (I get a lot of grief about this from my friends, trust me!) but I LOVE HOWARD STERN! He is, in his own words, an equal opportunity offender. The strippers, etc… don’t I find that stuff offensive? Sure. But underneath that stuff (and it is STUFF, it’s not the substance of what he has to say) is a real message. If you read his books (Private Parts and Miss America) you will see what I mean. He actually has a serious (no pun intended to Sirius) agenda. The fact that he (or rather, as he has pointed out many times, the stations carrying his program) was fined while he was on terrestial (sp?) radio for offensive language and situations, and Don Imus wasn’t, is proof that there is selective punishment in this country. Go, Howard! You made it to WOW! I’m truly impressed :).
And I love Arlen Specter: he’s always been the voice of reason among Republicans, and this interview shows that side well. I’m not sure if I agree with John McCain as the head of the Republican Party, but understand his reasoning. And who wants to bite off the head of El Rushbo? Spector is too smart to do that.
We’ll see what happens next, but thank you to WOW for posting this story, and making me smile today.
