British singing sensation wOws us … and Simon Cowell.

Susan Boyle

Susan Boyle captured the hearts of "Britain’s Got Talent" fans and, more importantly, Simon Cowell, fellow judges and YouTube crawlers.

Boyle, 47 and unemployed, got the crowd standing and cheering within seconds of beginning her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream,” from "Les Miserables." Check out the crowd as they cheer for Boyle, who some are now saying could win the entire competition.

Actress Demi Moore said the performance "moved me to tears." Will you have the same reaction? We did!

From the moment that Susan Boyle walked on stage the judges and audience appeared offended that she was going to waste their time.  "Obviously" she wouldn’t have talent because she certainly doesn’t have "looks".  But singing doesn’t come from the face, contrary to popular standards.  A similar thing happened last season at the "So You Think You Can Dance" auditions.  A very fat young man danced his BUTT off, doing leaps and splits as well as executing good form and style.  The audience went wild!  Afterwards Judge Nigel Lythgoe commended him but added that he was ONLY being applauded because he was FAT and dancing so well.  The judge reminded the contestant that his LOOK would never fly and advised him to go home and lost 100 pounds or so and try again another time!  Damned shame that the "have no talents, just opinions" sort of folks in this modern world can bring a truly talented person up or down.

I put a link to this video up on my blog a few days ago because I was so inspired by her tenacity and spirit.

I showed this to my husband on Monday and she had already gotten a million hits on youtube - in only 1-2 days.  When she came out standing up so straight, like singing in a church, and she had those dark stockings on with her yellow dressed up dress and her high heels, I just loved her.  I think it was the eyebrows that show how unaffected she was.  I guess she has been singing in her church for years and I heard a song from a CD she made that only sold 1000 copies - Cry Me A River.  Sounded cute and sexy and a little sultry.  One of the most astounding aspects of all of this was the way the crowd reacted to her.  The outpouring of love, admiration and joy lifted the notes even higher as she sang them.  I was totally blown away, as were so many.

This whole "Cinderella" story for Susan Boyle, just blessed me beyond measure. It spoke volumes with regards to the female Judge who stated that " this has truly been a wake up call for all of us" That being, we should never judge a person based on appearances alone!

Susan brought tears to my eyes, too. I think it was last year that Paul Potts did the same on the same show:

I too thought of Paul Potts the 1st time I saw the clip on the news 2 nights ago.  Both moved me to tears.

I was surprised to find that he still does that to me. And surprised that he’s still getting views on YouTube, up to over 44 million now. I heard that he has two albums out that are doing well. Wish the same for Susan, the show’s newest break out performer.

The look on the judges faces when she started to sing was priceless, then a few bars more and I started to cry.

Where has she been hiding? What a talent.

Let’s not forget that there are many poorly dressed, poorly groomed, homely or even frankly ugly people who have hearts of gold, even if they can’t sing!!  Perhaps, the lesson we should draw from Susan Boyle’s courageous performance is that there is more to everyone than what we see on the surface.  We should try to be less judgmental and more forgiving of people’s appearance, looking for the best in everyone and giving everyone a chance to shine.

Remember the joke in the New Yorker: a dog is typing on a computer keyboard and says to his comrade, another dog, "On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog"!!

Sam, great joke! Your post is a sad but true fact. I read somewhere today that she was starved of oxygen at birth and the result has been a learning disability. She was abused and teased by classmates because of this and still deals with some  issues to this day. Susan Boyle is a testament to the human spirit. She needs no "makeover"!

You are right about not judging by that surface that we see or even read, especially here where we’re all allowed to express our own convictions.  Thank you.

I’ll have to get over this business of tearing up every time I hear this woman sing. Strongly suspect we’ll be hearing a lot from her, and I can’t wait. She had them in the palm of her hand in just a few perfect notes. Wow O Wow!!

Awesome. Simply awesome.

As far as this business of physical appearance - how could you notice when every sensory mechanism was  zeroed into listening to her.

Follows are what some are saying about Susan Boyle on Twitter, [remembering that you are limited to 140 characters from Huffington Post]. I was so impressed with her immense strenght and staying totally dedicated to the lyrics and not being swayed a bit by all that is going on in the auditorium…that you see more in the YouTube video….actually there are a number that now have collectively had about 25 million hits!

Susan Boyle: The picture of courage. Immenseself-possession. Perfect Centeredness. Inner beauty. And a spirit of fun.

Susan Boyle: My definition of actualizing potentialby allowing the energy of the universe to flow through you.

Susan Boyle: One small person amazing, inspiring, and energizing the world.

Susan Boyle: The Imponderable, Improbable, evenImpossible Dream empowering us all to reach and achieve.

Susan Boyle: Her wondrous spirit washed over thathall in a flash, enveloping everyone, lifting them up, and filling theirhearts.

Susan Boyle: One moment. One person. One act ofopen surrender to what’s truly possible.

Susan Boyle: The power to change a face. The powerto melt a heart. The power to cover the earth with belief. From one smallvillage.

Susan Boyle: The immense, incalculable power ofinner vision, humility, persistence, and play.

Susan Boyle: Our living lesson that when lifeprovides a stage, sing your heart out, and prepare to be blessed!

Two reminders of hope: Captain Sully lands a plane, and Susan Boyle takes off with a career - equally improbably, and both trulygreat.

SusanBoyle: A walking paradox, as are we all, so her example gives us hope.

Here are the lyrics and fan sites that have sprung up in a couple of days!

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high,
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung,
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.

And still I dream he’ll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather…

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seems
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.
