We talk about raising children, losing weight and politics.

Mary Wells, Mind Reader

My friends are all doers and we talk about what we are doing or what others are doing. The only girly social talk I have known is in London where everything ends up one way or another about the queen. In New York there is very little time for intellectual or spiritual or sexual or medical or even much cultural discussion. And the restaurants are too noisy. We have developed a radar system and do pretty well reading each others’ minds. Our mistakes are hilarious but we forgive instantly.

The Bright Side of Political Scandal, by Judith Martin

Political scandals: We live in Washington. Thank goodness those keep happening, because otherwise my age group would be talking nonstop about their or their husbands’  knee or hip replacement surgery. Once, when we were threading our way through a National Academy of Science garden party, we heard so many such stories that I begged my husband to find me an intact scientist with no new body parts to announce.

Candice Bergen Talks Relationships, Dieting, Work and More

When we were younger, we’d talk about relationships. Having them, keeping them, finding them. Dieting. Work. When we were older we’d talk about the fruit of kept relationships: our kids, our work, politics. What we weren’t reading because who had time. Now, we talk about our kids, wonder what they’re doing, where they are. Our health. Our husbands’ health. Not minding not working. Politics.

Julia Reed on the Importance of Girlfriends

As we say in my neck of the woods: Life its own self. Meaning sex, love, work, triumphs, loss, family, food, memories, music and on and on and on. We vent, gossip, bitch, help each other stay sane, and pump and prop each other up when needed. Most of my closest friends I have had since childhood and there is nothing we can’t say to each other. I honestly don’t know what I would do without them.

We talk about politics.  About customer service…..how bad it has become.  We critique restaurants.  And of course grandchildren.  Ohh and husbands.

My best girlfriends are Lori, Juanita, Susan and Robin. They’re just friends, not girlfriends. I yap with them on just about anything. Usually, it’s what we are up to, problems, goals, family.

I read a lot of comments on this website and have noticed that most of the readers of wow are middle aged and up. I was wondering how different the post would be from younger readers….just curious!

You mean back when we thought we knew it all……lol….

Eldebbo C, the Wowowow Site was designed to be a site for woman 40 and older.

Yes, there is a very big difference  In what I talked about with my friends when I was in my twenties and now in my seventy’s.

When the conversation turns to children instead of it being about my own it’s about my great-grandsons.

Of course the Sex talks when we were young were wonderful………..I’m glad I have a good memory.

I guess the most talks are about our families……Politics and the State of the World at large.

Dahlings, the girls in that picture look like the granddaughters of my girlfriends.  That said, my dears, my friends and I talk about where to hear good local jazz, who’s going to make the next batch of martinis, and whether to call a cab or stay the night - so we can keep talking.

Well I’m 34 and me and bestie usually talk about our men, our weight, money, and her childs struggle with autism, and how to be an advocate for him. She’s an only child like me so I’m her sons auntie. When we do talk politics it usually centered around the economy and how it is going to effect us personally. I think topics do change as you get older and your views on life change. We’ve been friends since junior high and we used to talk about boys, more boys, and clothes.

Children, grandchildren, hot flashes, work, food, diets, our worries, …that’s when we see each other which is not that often. Everyone is too busy……………….

Family, health, and work usually are the most discussed.  The sad state of the world is starting to become the predominant topic of conversation, though.

My girlfriends (all in our 50’s) talk about our children & grandchildren, aging parents, interests (books, crafts, dieting).  We hardly ever talk politics (I think because we are all so different and we don’t want to argue or offend). Does that make us boring? I find that I don’t spill my guts like I did when I was younger and there is hardly ever any drama. I don’t know why, sometimes I wish I could but I don’t feel comfortable doing that anymore.

As a democrat in a sea of republicans, I certainly know what you mean about avoiding politics.

Boy, that picture of the girls in this thread’s photo reminded me of my much younger years, in the 1970’s.  My girlfriends and I discuss, in no particular order: families, politics, sports, health, work, finances and religion.
