A call for something positive! What has made you laugh lately? (A book, a movie, a show, a joke?)

Joan Ganz Cooney Laughs at 'Daily Show' Bobby Jindal Skit (Video)

Jon Stewart critiquing Bobby Jindal’s speech (which followed Obama’s major address last week). Stewart compared Jindal’s delivery with that of Mr. Rogers of "Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood," and it was spot-on and very funny.

Liz Smith on Hysterical NYMag Piece That Said Post Fired Her ...

The writer Jonathan van Meter’s perfectly hysterical comment in New York Magazine, to wit: "Last week the Post fired Liz Smith but not cartoonist Sean Delonas."

(Mr. D. is the guy who executed the cops-killing-an-ape cartoon that put the NAACP to picketing the newspaper!)

Candice Bergen on Steve Martin and Kristin Scott Thomas

Maybe Steve Martin on "SNL" two weeks ago. And weep? Just saw Kristin Scott Thomas in "I’ve Loved You So Long." OMG. What a brave, powerful performance. Just a sidebar.

Julia Reed: Laughter and 'Life on Mars'

Everything makes me laugh — thank God — but one thing that has been making me pretty consistently happy is my new absolute favorite TV show, "Life on Mars," set in 1973 New York City, complete with the fabulous Harvey Keitel in while slip-on shoes. It is so well written, well shot and well acted (Gretchen Mol is wondrous), and the soundtrack is out of sight. Every week it makes me laugh — and cry — and I can’t wait for the next installment.

Joan Juliet Buck 'Howls' at 'Onion TV' (Video)

"Onion TV" makes me howl with laughter every time.
It’s funnier than The Onion newspaper. It is witty, sharp and so well performed that it looks real.
And the deadpan approach is everything I need right now.
It’s enhanced my life and may save the world through derision.

I found this article about Wowowow in the LA Times this morning.  Thought it might interest some.

It’s Web 101 for this experienced intern - Los Angeles Times

Very interesting, Frannie Em. Not only ‘cause it’s about this website, but it gave me an idea or two about the current slowdown in my own business. Thank you for the link!

Thanks Frannie -  The news article was interesting.   And a good idea from Joni about hiring experienced media people who by volunteering at wOw are updating their own skills in order to reenter the media market at a later date.

NGOs can often benefit from very high-level professionals who want to donate time cyber volunteering. I have often utilized this wondrous source of expertise in decades past consulting for NGOS - and active with the early start up of VolunteerMatch. Just check out www.volunteermatch.org - there is a link there for cyber opportunities.

Thank you, sisters.

i’m sorry, but why if she is so experienced is she doing this for free? i can understand volunteering if your independantly wealthy and wants to give back to the community. but this is a person that is unemployed. just because she had a six figure job at one time doesn’t mean she can just live off her savings til something better comes along. unless i’m getting it wrong, but volunteering meant no pay where i come from. internship usually meant working but at lessor pay because the work place is paying for your schooling. this whole thing just is beyond my understanding, obviously i am missing something here obviously. could somebody explain what i am missing, politely of course?

Nancy—I read the article and had the same reaction.  I guess the intern is getting an education in computer skills while working parttime.  That and wowOwow on one’s resume are worth volunteering, I think.

oh ok. i’m so far behind the times that sometimes i think i’m just a dinosaur at 49. i took a couple of semesters of college back in the 80’s and early 90’s. not much of it is relavent today. but i try anyway. plus some of my short term and long term memory has been affected by lupus and fibromyalgia. thanx for getting me that answer, kermie!

Nancy—It isn’t just you; I graduated college in ‘78 when computer classes were a novelty. I’m the dinosaur. At 52 I need to go back to school in order to find work. I loved school and have always believed one never stops learning, but going back to school, now? Frankly, I saw the frightened look on that intern’s face in the photo, and I identify with her.

Thank you Nancy! This is exactly what my first thought was. She sounds like a very smart woman and has learned quickly and because of her prior experience….Doesn’t that count for atleast a salary of sorts? I’ve concluded that she should be paid…..Something!

Well, I can tell you why, at the age of sixty, I walked off my job with very little savings in my pocket and spent a year  with AmeriCorps.  I could not stand the environment in which I was working one more minute. Contrary to all good advice about retirement, I did not plan one thing about it.  I walked into my supervisor’s office, she said something, I can’t remember what now, but it ticked me off, and I announced to her that I intended to retire.  It was as though another person was speaking out of my mouth.   Because I have never felt my age, it did not occur to me that, at sixty, I would not be welcomed in another position utilizing some of my other  talents.  Other people may be judged by their age.  Surely, not me!  After a summer of looking for work, I joined AmeriCorps and spent a year as a literacy volunteer.  As I approached the end of my year, I began shopping my resume again and got responses from places where I had, previously, been rejected and  walked away from the year with a new job and a new outlook. It would seem that the year of volunteering made prospective employers look past my gray head and wrinkles and see that I had something to offer. That one line   on my resume did more for my ability to get a new position than another college degree could ever have done.   Three years ago, when I was going through it, the employment picture was no where near as bad as it is now.  However,it is my opinion that  as we age, we must be careful to keep our skills updated and our attitudes flexible.  We need to seize on every single opportunity available to us to meet people who may be in a position to give us a chance.  Plus, I felt that I spent the year helping other people.  What is it they say, ‘Do Good While Doing Well’?

thanx for taking the time to explain it to me sally. i didn’t know you had retired and at least had some income coming in. i am not against volunteering at all, in fact i totally promote it. but not everybody can retire and then go do volunteer work. so i was worried about how you were able to face everyday expenses.

it is a shame how this country acts against seniors. i’m only 49 and disabled. but i have problems finding work that i can do b/c i’m considered to old for the positions they want the youth in. i saw several ads in the local paper 18 - 24yrs old. must like loud music, must be young and energetic. i complained to the online job company (careerbuilder.com) that this was against the law and was discrimination. it took a few hits on the website about wrong job postings and they finally removed it. but even if they don’t advertize it that way, they end up hiring the ppl they want in the jobs they want and nobody knows the difference. Reno, NV is what is called a "right to work state" you can leave without reason and they can let you go without reason (not that the employment development dept believes that, they are federal and still won’t pay if you quit, even if you have good reason, went before a judge and they denied me over medical reasons, no workers comp in this state either). now the job market her is abyssmal (sp? my spell checker doesn’t work on this site for some reason) and ppl are losing their jobs, housing and self respect left and right. take care and i’m glad everything is working out for you now!

I absolutely LOVE Absolutely Fabulous!  It will interesting to see what they do to the concept on American tv when it comes out in the American version soon…..nothing in my mind can compare to Patsy and Edina falling into graves (how do they manage to make death FUNNY!) or spilling out of cars ("Kampai!  Kampai!").  Got me through the last year of my marriage and many many difficult times since.  Thanks for inspiring me to go out and rent the DVD again!
