I respect and admire Christiane Amanpour. She’s articulate, intelligent and well informed. I watch Maria Bartiromo. She knows her stuff.
He’s not a new and upcoming star but he’ll always be one of my all time favorites, Gil Noble "Like It Is."
James: Your background and experience certainly qualifies your choice, but even if I had not been aware of this, I would certainly agree with your choice of Erica Hill. She’s outstanding…and lovely, as well.
Lauriate, I’m going to starting calling you Nobel, if you don’t mind!
Erica is beautiful, for sure, but when it comes to journalism, I don’t see looks, just skill. She has good skill, is very intelligent, and her personality is very friendly, but serious when it needs to be. The cable-TV news and sports departments nowadays are so over-loaded with good-looking stiffs who serve as eye candy, but nobody’s home in the attic. Erica Hill and Campbell Brown are very brainy on CNN, and have good personalities. I’m glad that Erica’s getting a little more air-time in the prime-time slots.
The real test of a good journalist, in my opinion, is her or his writing ability. Broadcast news should be written for the ear, in an hourglass pattern, for the most part. Don’t overstock the top of the newscast - or top of a story - with all of the "good" stuff. That’s the old newspaper style (inverted pyramid), designed to allow editors back in the day to crop off the end of news stories with razor blades in order to make the story fit the hole (allotted space) on the newspaper lighting table (prior to being sent to the camera, and then, printing).
If I hear one more local crime story end with "it’s still under investigation", I think I’ll climb the wall! Ha!
Certainly Rachel Maddow. She is so sharp, well-informed and savvy. She can be witty without sarcasm; she can be pointed in her questioning without being confrontational; she can see through pretension and obfuscation very quickly.
As a die-hard liberal, I sometimes find myself surprised by Megan McCain, with whom I often disagree, but still respect. Her comments always seem heartfelt, non-doctrinaire, and independent.
And I would like to see Whoopi Goldberg taking a larger role in political and social commentary. She is always the voice of reason on The View, and speaks out fearlessly. Love her!
Susan, that’s why I like Rachel Maddow better than Keith Olbermann. He comes across as so mean-spirited/sarcastic, while Rachel has an element of warmth to her cutting remarks. Ha! I had a hard time watching Keith after he made fun of people who believe in End Times prophecies, as though anyone who cracks a Bible is a right-wing cook (chef). Ha.
