Marlo Thomas's Preference Over Those 'Screaming Boys'

By rising star you don’t mean any of our all-time faves like Diane, Katie, Christiane, Cynthia and Lesley. If you mean new – I like Rachel Maddow because I always learn a little something when I watch her, as opposed to most of the screaming boys. And she’s so sassy. And I like Campbell Brown. She knows her stuff and she does it all with a great amount of charm and ease. They’re both here to stay.

Liz Smith on the Women in Media Who've Made an 'Impact'

I have all I can do to keep up with the wOw rising stars, some of whom have already risen – the admired Lesley Stahl, Whoopi Goldberg and Cynthia McFadden. I admire Christiane Amanpour and my old friends Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric. When some rising star makes an impact on me, you’ll know it. Right now I am struggling to remember their names.

Lesley Stahl Names Her Favorite Female Newsers

It’s more and more difficult for anyone in the TV news business to make a name for herself (or himself) because audiences are shriveling, and there are so many choices of outlets (cable and otherwise). When I started at CBS News, there were only three. Still, there seem to be as many impressive young women on the air as men … which warms the heart! I’m a big fan of Mika Brzezinski on "Morning Joe." She’s become one of the "guys" on hard news subjects. I’m impressed with Maria Bartiromo and Erin Burnett at CNBC, and Kimberly Dozier at CBS. ‘Course, I still love the been-around-for-a-while types – like Diane Sawyer!

Erin Burnett on CNBC and MSNBC is the most appealing young reporter I’ve seen in a while.

Candice Bergen: 'Rachel Maddow Is the Smart Chick du Jour'

Rachel Maddow is the Smart Chick du Jour but here to stay. A total Star.

Like Lesley, Mika Brzezinski has been someone I’ve watched and enjoyed for sometime.  I use to stay up really late just to see her take on the news on CBS late nights!

I respect and admire Christiane Amanpour. She’s articulate, intelligent and well informed. I watch Maria Bartiromo. She knows her stuff.

He’s not a new and upcoming star but he’ll always be one of my all time favorites, Gil Noble "Like It Is."

Erica Hill on CNN. She’s really smart, and an underrated journalist, in my opinion. She was cutting her teeth for a while, but has really hit her stride.

James: Your background and experience certainly qualifies your choice, but even if I had not been aware of this, I would certainly agree with your choice of Erica Hill. She’s outstanding…and lovely, as well.

Lauriate, I’m going to starting calling you Nobel, if you don’t mind!

Erica is beautiful, for sure, but when it comes to journalism, I don’t see looks, just skill. She has good skill, is very intelligent, and her personality is very friendly, but serious when it needs to be. The cable-TV news and sports departments nowadays are so over-loaded with good-looking stiffs who serve as eye candy, but nobody’s home in the attic. Erica Hill and Campbell Brown are very brainy on CNN, and have good personalities. I’m glad that Erica’s getting a little more air-time in the prime-time slots.

The real test of a good journalist, in my opinion, is her or his writing ability. Broadcast news should be written for the ear, in an hourglass pattern, for the most part. Don’t overstock the top of the newscast - or top of a story - with all of the "good" stuff. That’s the old newspaper style (inverted pyramid), designed to allow editors back in the day to crop off the end of news stories with razor blades in order to make the story fit the hole (allotted space) on the newspaper lighting table (prior to being sent to the camera, and then, printing).

If I hear one more local crime story end with "it’s still under investigation", I think I’ll climb the wall! Ha!

I think Rachel Maddow is the bee’s knees. She does a whole hour all by herself. Her format is almost like a classroom––she’s very much a teacher. Her reporting is in depth, her guests are noteworthy and relevant to the discussion, her persona is engaging––she’s very funny, very down to earth. And–––and SHE’S BALANCED––news wise.

By my last glance I’d have to say Campbell Brown.  I don’t like what CNN gives her everyday to work with but there is a serious and light side. Rick Sanchez has an afternoon program that discusses a variety of timely and sometimes controversial issues.  Quite a following on facebook as well.

I would have to agree with others that say Rachel Maddow. I don’t particularly care for her anymore, but she does have the appeal that attracts a wide array of viewers. She is funny (in her own offbeat way) she is Gay (has a huge following and pool of support in that regard) and she speaks in simple terms and makes news understandable and less complex. I could see her going far.

I couldn’t name a single TV journalist outside the few big names like Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and Barbara Walters. But I think I’ll watch Rachel Maddow after reading some of the above. Where is she? what channel?

Chrome: Rachel is on msnbc at 9.00 EST and at 11.00. She also has a web site. She uses the word "bull cocky" when confronted with fabrications from various and sundry. She sparkles––very different than Sanford’s sparking, I might add.

Hi Chrome, I would echo all of the pro-Rachel comments….We were introduced to her as a regular guest on Keith Olbermann…others knew her from Air America, I think…I admire her listening skills and her ability to be unfailingly polite…what an old-fashioned concept…..I have learned to love her rapid-fire delivery that I found a bit disconcerting at first…I just tell myself, OK, get ready to listen fast for an hour….she is so passionate about what she does and has to pack a lot of info into that hour…..

Certainly Rachel Maddow. She is so sharp, well-informed and savvy. She can be witty without sarcasm; she can be pointed in her questioning without being confrontational; she can see through pretension and obfuscation very quickly.

As a die-hard liberal, I sometimes find myself surprised by Megan McCain, with whom I often disagree, but still respect. Her comments always seem heartfelt, non-doctrinaire, and independent.

And I would like to see Whoopi Goldberg taking a larger role in political and social commentary. She is always the voice of reason on The View, and speaks out fearlessly. Love her!

Susan, that’s why I like Rachel Maddow better than Keith Olbermann. He comes across as so mean-spirited/sarcastic, while Rachel has an element of warmth to her cutting remarks. Ha! I had a hard time watching Keith after he made fun of people who believe in End Times prophecies, as though anyone who cracks a Bible is a right-wing cook (chef). Ha.
