Thanks, Jeannot! I’m hoping Detroit will seal the series Tuesday night, because you never know what could happen if Pittsburgh wins and forces a deciding Game 7 in Detroit on Friday night.
From the voting results thus far, it looks as though the Oscar goes to … the Oscars! Funny: this interminable show, laden with schmaltz and cheese and boring production numbers and lame jokes, occasionally enlivened by a truly incandescent moment still has that certain something. Part of it is all the red carpet nonsense, I think: "Who are you wearing?" (And the sight of a 22-year-old starlet parading down the carpet in a bazillion dollars worth of borrowed fashion and loaner gems never fails to amuse. Especially when the results are - so often - completely age-inappropriate, overblown or just plain silly! Ah, but wait - here comes Helen Mirren, and WOWEE - she looks fabulous!)
Anyway, I loved the awards when Whoopi hosted. Her tangy wit was just what the occasion demanded. I also loved Billy Crystal’s stint. But one of these days, I hope the Oscar producers figure out that this is a tribute to movies, and devote a whole lot more time to actually showing clips from the films rather than excruciatingly lame "banter" between the presenters, and riduculous covers of Oscar-nominated songs, and so on.
Irish Eyes, have you ever seen Emma Thompson’s Golden Globes acceptance speech when she won for Best Adapted Screenplay (Sense and Sensibility)? She was so funny, witty and natural - she gave the speech as though Jane Austen herself had written in - just priceless! Best of all, she was wearing a simple black gown that she had most likely purchased, her hair kept falling in her eyes, there were no ropes of diamonds around her neck, and she was absolutely gorgeous! So yes: why NOT the Golden Globes?
The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for humor. It is simple and always fun and funny. The other Kennedy Center honors are good too. I watch the Oscars and Emmys and Tonys and Golden Globes, but I really love the MTP. And of course the Nobel prize lectures are now online, and I find them fascinating: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/lists/2008.html
This year’s Tonys were spectacular tonight … and the old time shots brought back so many memories of practically living in Broadway theater from childhood on . . . a real "rush" tonight!
The Tonys always the Tonys. Real people in real clothes (although some are REALFUNNY), and a sense of humor about themselves. All the others (especially the Oscars) take themselves and "their position" so seriously, and it feels so unmerited.
Watched the oscars for the first time in years this year and didn’t hate it.
The Tony Awards for a chance to get a taste of those shows we may like to see. As well…….some of the people are so out there :) Love it. The Oscars are glam, glam, glam and they’re fun to watch. Apologies to Whoopi, but my vote is to bring back Billy Crystal.
Don’t watch awards shows. I do like seeing awards given for bravery tho, like they do for average citizens that save someones life or go above and beyond to help others and serve the country. The awards for being a good actor/actress seems a bit vain to me. I’d think the money made from being a good performer would be reward enough.
Celebs are more relaxed, probably the wine at the tables, and the winners are often a surprise, probably dur to the small number of voters. I like an awards show that where you don’t already know who is going to win.
