Liz Smith 'Was Stagestruck By the Old Le Cirque'

My favorite restaurant in the entire world is the original Le Cirque, now moved to other domains, which opened in the Mayfair Hotel on 63rd Street and gave Sirio Maccioni to the world. It was here I met the real upper crust, or what was left of it. It was here I had wine sent to me by Richard Nixon and was told by Roy Cohn a lot of horrid little stories about J. Edgar Hoover, and here that I first sat with Brooke Astor, Barbara Walters, Joan Ganz Cooney and so many other grand ladies who enabled my career and my life. I was stagestruck by the old Le Cirque and it is still my idea of the high life.

Mary Wells on Fat Duck, Red Dog Saloon and Strangelove

I have traveled to many places for many years and I am always falling in love with new restaurants wherever I go.

Fat Duck in England is supposed to be the best restaurant in the world today (according to chefs) so when I go to England this fall I will check it out and tell you about it. Right now I am in Alaska on Strangelove and my chef is clearly the best chef I have experienced so far in Alaska. There is a place popular with locals called the Red Dog Saloon that I will check out as I have heard edgy, colorful stories I will share — if they are true. Yesterday we caught one of the largest halibuts the fishermen who took us fishing had seen. It took almost two hours to bring him in.

I am not big on killing anything but I eat fish and am steeling myself to see so many of them flapping in our galley.

What to Order at the Four Seasons Grill Room, by Joan Ganz Cooney

I am happiest in the Grill Room of the Four Seasons at lunch. It’s an upper. I usually order a crabmeat salad, which isn’t on the menu. If I want desserts, it’s Le Cirque hands down.

Since ambiance is more important than food for me…

Elaine’s in NYC on Second Avenue. I would order a veal chop. The waiters treat me like I’m a famous person because I used to live in the neighborhood and used to frequent the place for three years. I would go early, like 6:30 or 7:00 (you can’t get in later unless you’re known which I’m not). I saw lots of famous people. Sigh…and the food is good too!

In Houston, Fogo de Chao when I have an appetite. I’m getting too old to eat heavy anymore. Wish I liked fish more.

Ah food, a whole gallery of food passes before me.  We can’t dismiss Bogart’s in Cancun where they place a pillow beneath the lady’s feet. Or (and damn my memory) a restaurant in London that was so exquisite with their delicious food and a Beefeater at the door.  I don’t believe there is a bad restaurant in New York, or at least we haven’t found it — a restaurant in Little Italy where the waiter brought me a meal….a fish stuffed with all kinds of seafood and covered in a lovely, lovely tomato sauce…..that has never been duplicated.  Getting hungry, have to stop now and have some boring breakfast.

Captain Anderson’s in Panama City Beach Florida. You get the freshest seafood from the Gulf. I would order their grilled sampler platter which includes shrimp, scallops, and crab. Love it! They also have a seafood store beside the restaurant where you can go in and pick out fresh seafood and take it home to cook.

Ah!  There’s my problem!  I’m only supposed to have ONE favorite restaurant instead of dozens.  Maybe if I work on limiting the list I can lose some of these well-earned extra pounds;-)

Lee, I’m in the same quandary! It can depend on the mood, the time of year, the company you’re with, etc. My favorite local place is called ‘DiNero’s’ and we had a wonderful dinner there Saturday night. I usually order steak or veal. Their appetizers are always interesting - we tried a fresh pear, gorgonzola and walnut pizza this time. Yummy!

Hmmm. Le Moulin de la Galette in Paris is without doubt the loveliest and most romantic spot to dine. Elegant terrace, service beyond compare and food that is superb.

But here in the states, I would not be able to pick just ONE! If I had to, however, (and this query DOES limit it to one) I think it would be Le Madeleine on W. 43rd near Ninth Avenue. Small, cozy, great place for a meal before or after a play or concert, and yummy food. It’s crowded, lots of conversations to eavesdrop on, and the occasional sighting of a Broadway star as an added bonus.

That being said, there are a couple of places from the past that I’d like to have a time machine in order to go back and visit, notably Mario’s Little Place, down in the Village. I would go just to savor the house specialty of braised chicken livers in mushroom wine sauce, and enjoy some banter with the flirtatious Italian waiters. Then a stroll over to Ferrara’s (thankfully still going strong) to enjoy a sfogliatelle and an espresso.

Far too many to name.  Recently, friends and I had lunch at a small cafe in Richmond, Texas.  " Another Time" has a soda fountain and makes all foods from scratch, just like from another time… the 40’s and 50’s.  It’s a kick to sit at the fountain and have a root beer float.  We had the Blue Plate Special of the day… $5.99.   King Ranch casserole, fresh green beans, salad, and an assortment of muffins and cornbread sticks.  Real butter, of course!

My favorite restaurant WAS Payard on Lexington Avenue in NYC.  I used to go there for breakfast.  The first time I had a cappuccino and an almond croissant there, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.  Unfortunately, Payard has fallen victim to the recession and has been forced to close.  I’d rather start my day with the most delectable breakfast on earth than eat lunch or dinner at any fancy restaurant.

wow… i eat out a lot. In a lot of places. this is way to hard to call. However… i am going to NYC for the first time in my life in september. i think i’ll reserve my answer until AFTER that trip lol!

I will say that I just got back from the annual ladies only motorcycle ride I go on. We went to Lochsa Lodge on the Idaho/Montana border. Surprisingly the food was incredible! Had a blue cheese tomatoe bisque soup that will haunt my dreams…. and the fresh huckleberry or blackberry cobblers…. wow.. no words for that!

Pocohantas Pancakes Virginia Beach - best banana topped French toast ever!

Giovvani’s Virgina Beach - the pizza is divine!

Thai Basil at plaza intersection of 28 and 50 Fairfax Va - Best lemon grass soup!

And when I get an urge for a burger, Red Robin’s Blue Ribbon Burger (has blue cheese on it) or their Chicken Brichetta Burger are excellent choices.
