Liz Smith 'Was Stagestruck By the Old Le Cirque'

My favorite restaurant in the entire world is the original Le Cirque, now moved to other domains, which opened in the Mayfair Hotel on 63rd Street and gave Sirio Maccioni to the world. It was here I met the real upper crust, or what was left of it. It was here I had wine sent to me by Richard Nixon and was told by Roy Cohn a lot of horrid little stories about J. Edgar Hoover, and here that I first sat with Brooke Astor, Barbara Walters, Joan Ganz Cooney and so many other grand ladies who enabled my career and my life. I was stagestruck by the old Le Cirque and it is still my idea of the high life.

Mary Wells on Fat Duck, Red Dog Saloon and Strangelove

I have traveled to many places for many years and I am always falling in love with new restaurants wherever I go.

Fat Duck in England is supposed to be the best restaurant in the world today (according to chefs) so when I go to England this fall I will check it out and tell you about it. Right now I am in Alaska on Strangelove and my chef is clearly the best chef I have experienced so far in Alaska. There is a place popular with locals called the Red Dog Saloon that I will check out as I have heard edgy, colorful stories I will share — if they are true. Yesterday we caught one of the largest halibuts the fishermen who took us fishing had seen. It took almost two hours to bring him in.

I am not big on killing anything but I eat fish and am steeling myself to see so many of them flapping in our galley.

What to Order at the Four Seasons Grill Room, by Joan Ganz Cooney

I am happiest in the Grill Room of the Four Seasons at lunch. It’s an upper. I usually order a crabmeat salad, which isn’t on the menu. If I want desserts, it’s Le Cirque hands down.

My fav is in the Atlanta area in a small city called Buford in North Atlanta. Char 88 is the BEST steakhouse in the Southeast! In addition ,the fried green tomatoes and collard greens are worth the trip. Absolutly a must if you live in Atlanta or are in the area.

The bar and grill at Musso’s and Franks, Dan Tanas, Dupars for Breakfast-Los Angeles

The Severn Inn in Annapolis. Diners arrive in their private boats, The dock-patio goes out over the Severn River and you can often feel it lap your feet.  At twilight you look acros a vast body of river back at the stolid, historic buildings of the Naval Academy.

Nora’s in Washington, as well as Citronelle, Blue Duck Tavern, Komi, Rasika, Brassiere Beck.

South Philadelphia Italian: Dante and Luigi’s, La Famiglia, Monte Carlo.

I don’t know if it is still around but the most interesting and fun restaurant, with really good food (I had the grilled swordfish) is Papdakis Taverna in San Pedro CA.  It’s a family owned greek restaurant, the owners meet you at the door, kiss the women on the cheek (much to the dismay of my then boyfriend, I got three kisses from three good looking brothers, lol)  They had a belly dancer later for entertainment and people were throwing plates on the floor!  It was so much fun!  The food was great!  If it is still there,  I highly recommend it to people in CA.

I’d have to say Gallagher’s Boxty House in Dublin. There’s nothing like Murphy’s stew with boxty and a nice pint to warm you up after a chilly Irish day. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the staff is very nice, too.

If I stay a bit closer to home, what I’d love right now is White Manna in Hackensack, NJ. Tiny delicious burgers made in a tiny tin shack. Yummmm…

One of my favorite places closed a few years ago, sadly. Centro Latino, I think it was in Union City, NJ. It was sparkling clean with friendly, efficient staff, and great food. Best Cuban sandwich I’ve ever had.

The Cape Cod Room at the Drake Hotel in Chicago….their Bookbinder soup is the best!!  My parents began taking my brother and I there  when I was about 4 to learn the etiquiette of dining at a fine restaurant. We were from Indiana and a trip to Chicago was special occasion.  This was when similar restaurants still required jackets and ties and women routinely wore gloves and hats with flair.  I just celebrated my 50th birthday there this week and it’s still the best!

I would have to say Beulah’s in Port Aransas. Before moving to its current location the restaurant was located at The Tarpon Inn. Countless memories were created over the years, first by my grandparents who would take us as children and then as an adult this is where my girlfriends and I would celebrate our birthdays each year. The ambiance of the courtyard and restaurant was absolutely incredible and would transform us to a different place and time. I always felt so grown up just being there….even when I was grown up! The restaurant moved from The Tarpon Inn to another location on the island and when I heard this I was very disappointed, however, this made available the hotel’s beautiful courtyard for weddings. I think fate was looking out for us as this is where my husband and I ended up having our wedding and where we held our reception. It could not have been more perfect to have shared our special day with our family and friends in such a unique and special place! Even though the restaurant is no longer where it used to be it is now located on the water with beautiful views and the food is still as wonderful as it always was. When eating at Beulah’s we always start out with some wine, lump crap meat on toast points, then we move on to the cucumber squid salad and the most tasty teriyaki sesame tuna and wasabi mashed potatoes ever made. We finish up with a piece of their bourbon pecan pie and all in the world is good! Now I am missing ‘home’ and I am really hungry!

Pina’s famous Lasagne Rustiche alle Verdure, Piccione in Agrodolce which is stuffed squab, Budino allo Zabaglione which is baked quail’s eggs in winter black truffle, Fonduta di Toma con uovo e tartufo which is Fondue of cheese with a poached egg and the Stracotto di bue in Barolo. Finished with Zabaglioni pudding with Amaretto sauce. That does it for me

I also follow  every suggestion that comes from the legendary Gael Greene… I have so much respect and admiration for that woman! Am I the only who has a mild obsession with her?

El Cholo in La Habra, California.  I absolutely love their traditional "rolled" tacos. They also have the best Margaritas on the planet.

If you like seafood - the the Harbor Grill in Dana Point, California has some of the best grilled fish in So Cal.
