Judith Martin on Undiscovered Venice

My vacation destination, Venice, must be the most beaten track in the world, which doesn’t stop people from bragging that they know the secret, undiscovered Venice (which always turns out to be the same Venice where the rest of us hang out).

Joan Juliet Buck's Hidden NYC Dinner

The Market Diner at 11th Avenue and 43rd Street, an expansive New Jersey-type diner with parking spots, a patio (alas too near the traffic), great staff, good food, orange booths. It conveys a slower, happier feeling than is usually found in NYC diners and is full of hard hats, cops, nurses and tourists. Heaven.

Joan Ganz Cooney's Ideal Getaway

My favorite vacation spot is Le Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat. The hotel is located in one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been.

Mary Wells's Hiding Place

The Mirande Hotel in Avignon is my favorite hotel in the world. If I need to disappear that is where I will hide.

Liz Smith, in the Heart of Greenwich Village

My favorite off the track is The Pink Tea Cup in Greenwich Village. Deep-fried bacon, fried chicken, coconut cake, soul food.

DeBurca…Deber just wrote to me in the "Mr. President" article/section that it’s pure "hyperbole" for me to say that there was a full-fledged depression in the Midwest before Obama took office. What planet are some of these Republicans living on?

The planet of right wing fantasy where Obama isn’t legally president and Bush wasn’t so bad after all! It relies on daily talking points from FOX and a desperate need to believe that spin so they can live with their warped view of the world.

Well, I was in a fiesty mood last night, but forgiving today. Just got done with a swim. And, as you know living in Chicago (200 miles from me), it’s a gorgeous day!

Asheville, NC.  I went on vacation there once and was enchanted.  There were no fast food places, no big chain stores, the main bookstore is independently owned, there are quirky art galleries, and places to relax, or hike, depending on how you feel.  The weather, in degrees, was amazingly similar to NYC, but without the humidity because you are in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Asheville is what I dream about on days when I wake up with a smile on my face.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. This is a road that forces you to slow down as you meander through the mountains. It is a place you will find a lot of wonderful bed and breakfasts in the charming small towns. It is a dream trip if you allow yourself the time to do it right.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. In the Outer Banks. No cell phone service and oh so wonderful.

I agree Barbara B. Villa D’Este and the Grand Hotel at Cap Ferrat.  The quiet only marked by the cicadas.

Cup o’Jo’s, 3rd St., German Village, Columbus, Ohio!  Beats the heck out of Starbucks and is much less expensive, too.

I am going to a convention in Columbus in August. Can you tell me what places not to miss while I am there? We are staying at the Hyatt Regency. I don’t know if we will fly up or drive just yet. How far is the German Village from that hotel?

I am a huge fan of Bed and Breakfasts. There’s a wonderful one "Stewart House" in Hudson, New York.  It’s right on the water. The owner is also the chef. The food was delicious!  The chef picked fresh herbs and vegetables from his private little garden. It’s surrounded by a   small community of houses.  I have not been in a few years. The last time I visited there were a few antique shops within walking distance.

I believe I learned about it reading the  New Yorker. Stewart House was once a hotel. It has a formal dining room and an informal dining room/bar. The rooms are spacious and cozy and beautifully decorated by the part owner wife. My room had antique furnishings and wallpaper designed by the part owner/wife.

I also enjoy going to the hamptons, Rhode Island etc. Any palace where I can take a book and lots of writing paper and just relax.

My favorite place is the island of Delos in the Agean sea.  It is like being in another world.

Florianopolis, Brazil. I grew up there, but I lived in the U.S. for part of my childhood, too. I miss it so much—go back whenever I can! :) http://ow.ly/fHt0

A waterfall ~ anywhere, but especially in Japan (my first waterfall experience as a child, near Nikko) or off the highway up to Mentone, Alabama.  I love to sit in them and just be still in mind and body, while the water rushes around me.  It’s the best and most addictive peace I have found.  Also, Mentone, Ala. is wonderful, with cabins to rent, an antique mall, and some very eclectic shops….sort of in the country, on a mountain.
