Who Would Liz Smith Cast to Play Her? Hilary Swank Or ...

I don’t believe we have an actress callow and immature enough to play me, but how about someone I resemble very slightly? The wonderful Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank, who is about to play Amelia Earhart. She has that slightly tomboyish aspect. (Although when she is all dressed up, she’s a true beauty.) Or failing that, if we could bring back to life the zany actress ZaSu Pitts.

HEY LIZ: How about Stockard Channing?  It would have to someone with a great sense of  humor or a half breath away from a giggle.

The thing is…. to play Liz in a movie you’d have to have actresses of so many ages! Although Cate Blanchett played several decades in the movie Benjamin Buttons. I could see her as Liz.

Also… any reason why I can’t access the original question as to "who would play you in a movie"? but can only access the ladies answers?

I don’t think you lack sophistication, Liz (not outwardly anyway - but this is coming from someone whose young daughter said that even when dressed to the nines there is still something a bit Elly Mae Clampett about me! - haha. What’s really sad is that I knew what she meant). Okay, first actress that came to my mind to play *you*: Drew Barrymore.

Dear friends who were tempted to comment. I am so flattered by all suggestions. Also Love our darling Sheila Nevins on this

subject. Sheila knows I can make a tribute speech in public, but she assume I could help along the movie of her life. No, that

would take someone like Meryl Streep.  I didn't know this question asked for a title for the "move." For mine I'd hve to suggest

"Little Miss Shitkicker."  No point in leaving my Texas roots out of things. Love, Liz   P.S. But as usual Candice Bergen has the best idea.  Who woulnd't want to be played by the wonderful actress Whoopi goldberg. And Whoopi would like being Candy, as

she always says she always wanted to be a blonde.  And thank you Eileen for the idea of Drew Barrymore for me. Just great.

Drew Barrymore or Cate Blanchett.  And I love the "Little Miss Shitkicker" although I suspect those who are not from Texas will understand it.  On second thought, many who are from Texas will not understand it either.

Liz, you mentioned Hilary Swank as being slightly ‘tomboyish’…what’s that mean?  Why are girls and women who play sports, the Olympics for example, called ‘tomboys’?  That’s applied to women/girls who play what’s considered traditionally boys sports.  Here in Canada, we have a women’s Hockey Team who won several medals at more than one Olympic Winter game venue.  Does that mean they’re ‘tomboys’?  Why does gender and sport matter that much.  No one questions a man who skates or who’s a decorator or chef or who runs a flower shop or who’s a designer.  They’re not considered ‘sissies’ because these careers used to be the sole domain of women. Gee Liz…I thought society and you (no offense meant, by the way) had moved beyond that type of labelling.

The perfect actress who could play Liz Smith is none other than multi-academy winner Meryl Streep. She has the same mannerism and sense of humor. However, if you need a younger one to play you, Amy Adams is my first choice.

I have to agree with you, Lovely Soul. Meryl Streep is the only choice from a strictly technical point of view. Liz, you are a character and what is needed is a versatile character-playing actress. I just do not think that the younger actresses would hit the mark in terms of the time span needed…no matter how much talent that they possess. I think that Meryl would jump at the chance, as well!

C’mon, EVERYBODY understands "Shitkicker"!

My nomination for Movie Liz: Jodie Foster.

The main quality for playing Liz Smith is a sense of capability and determination, that she can do anything and that nothing stops her. To me that says Jodie.

Not really.  Not everyone remembers Urban Cowboy.  Most people probably think of George W Bush when they hear the word "shitkicker" and I doubt Liz Smith would appreciate the association but then I don’t know Liz Smith even in passing so I really can’t say whether she would or not.

Yes, either Jodie Foster or Meryl Streep could play Liz well!
