wOw's Had a Face-Lift (Well, Only Some Botox)

Joni Evans
After listening to your continued helpful feedback, I’m delighted to say that wOw is presenting a newer, cleaner design today that we hope you will enjoy. We’ve added forums, in which we know many of you have asked to participate. In addition, we’ve highlighted certain sections that we think will make navigation easier for you.

Take a look and tell us what you think.

I think I liked it better before, mainly because I am drawn to interesting-sounding headlines, rather than feeling loyalty to certain features.  There are fewer headlines easily visible now at the home screen, so I will have to put in more effort to look around.

Is Margo not a "wOw Woman"? I don’t see her in the pics at the top … or perhaps she was never there and it’s taken me this long to realize it. Anyway I love the little tabs in the upper right corner - so cute!

One suggestion: the buttons in the menu bar should say what they are on rollover. I recognize RSS, print, and Facebook, and am guessing the envelope is e-mail? But I don’t know the others. Also it would be nice if the wOw Features section was above the Most section. Am hoping more Update Profile changes are coming, to include a Display Name.

Wow, that was a mouthful. Overall I am very happy to see these changes! This is one of my top 5 websites, so thank you!

I, too, miss the "frazzle headed girl" on the weather graphics…reminded me of myself…lol

Rose and whoever on the WoW staff who did this…but our frazzle haired girl is back!!!  She has attitude!!!  I didn’t like the ‘new’ girl that they had yesterday…the artistic rendering looked like a wig ad from the 80s…

Welcome home Fraz!!!

I think I liked it better before, more colorful and easier to find the topics that interested me, but I’ll have to do more investigating (I don’t handle change well!)

Generally I agree with the new look.

The new format is better organized as Linda Myers has pointed out and as she says, “Less searching and scrolling, compact and friendly”.

Also, I’m with Marjorie C that it is sleeker and cleaner, though I don’t find it any easier to navigate.

Lila Kuh’s point about being drawn to, “interesting-sounding headlines”, is in my view, a very valid point and I find that detail missing in the modification.

My foremost criticism, of a negative nature, is the new look lacks an attractive and eye-catching frame. To me, it is like visiting my regular favorite movie theatre, only to find when I get there that the familiar “theatre marquee” has been taken down. The building is still there, the movies are still great, I can easily return to my favorite seat in the house - none of that is changed. But without seeing that welcoming marquee as I arrive, I have to work at feeling that I’m at the comfortable homey place I’m accustomed to.

Not really diggin it at all. I guess I’m in the minority though and will adjust gracefully.

Wendy—I think they are asking us, what is our opinion, so that they can make changes if enough people don’t like a particular feature.  We suggest, they adjust, or not.  I believe they really want constructive criticism.  I think it is too much change at once.  I signed in and it was the old site then half an hour later I wanted to check something and it was this.  We needed a warning—or if there was one, I missed it.

True, well then I don’t like it. The ease with which I navigated the site before is lost. Now I have to just spend too much time digging around to find what I’m lookin for.It does not seem like much of an upgrade to me, it’s kinda like they deleted everything and mushed it all together.

Original design was so much chicer and easier to navigate. Took me way too long to find star signs button-embedded in a group of very ordinary looking buttons that looked small and pedestrian. I’m close to saying I hate your new design-sometimes it’s really best to leave well enough alone!

I don’t like it what so ever!  Switch it back please!

Does anyone else see the screen with a blank 1.5 inch margin on both sides of their screen with all the content centered in the middle?  Even with the ad blocker temporarily turned off it’s still there.  My screen is a standard laptop size screen.  I can scroll down and see everything, but the blank margins on the sides seems like a waste of screen space.  I’ve always been a huge fan of "Web Pages That Suck" (learn good web design by viewing bad design) - it’s informative as well as funny and very entertaining.

Not that the new/old layout is/was bad, but it never hurts to hunt out new ideas.

B Clark—I went to that website.  It was very good—required reading for anyone who designs their own websites.  I will pass it on (but not through those networking sites—ugh!).

I take a look at the Worst Web sites lists every so often and the description of the worst contender for Jan - Mar 2009 had me laughing so hard I almost hyperventilated.  Vince Flanders checklists make it so easy to evaluate your own site.  And he’s SO right about Flash splash screens - I hit the ‘Skip Intro’ button every time and if a ‘Skip Intro’ button is not offered, that site loses my interest fairly quickly.  The Wowowow site has never been bad at all, but their navigation has had me hunting around for some articles that were over a day old, were not on the front page anymore and I wanted to check back on some comments.

Kermie, I agree with you. I liked the old format better.  I too would probably not have "adopted" this website as one of my daily visits if it had been in the current format. Apparently I am in the minority. As my father used to say, "That’s what makes horse racing so popular!"
