Serafina is dying. She’s a grey foundling, approx 11-12 years old, who looks exactly like a British Blue. She has an oral cancer. The vet expected me to put her down upon diagnosis, but I can’t take her life. I put down a cat once before on a vet’s advice, and I have not been able to find peace about it. I’ll not do that again. She is by my side every minute, and by her side I’ll stay.
I hear you. Even when AC ( Angel Cat or A$$ Hole Cat, depending on her whims) was so old , I had to carry her because she no longer had muscle. But she was content to sit in my lap and read the paper with me. It was only when she began moaning when moved that I knew she was hurting and getting no enjoyment from life anymore. I had to put her down. Then I went nuts.
That’s what is so hard about pets. You know you will probably out live them. To part with them for the last time is so unsettling and heartbreaking, but they bring such unconditional love each and every day. Cats, dogs, horses. All precious family. Please give Serafina a kiss for me.
I forgot to answer Community Manager’s question. Terrific cats that have shared or do share my life have been Helen Keller ( she was born blind), Trouble, Catastrophic, Cat Ballou, Patchwork ( a calico) , Bandido, Geraldine, CryBaby, and Simple Simon.
Thanks so much! We never name our pets until we’ve had them a couple of weeks. Then , their true personalities do emerge . We have a long list of dogs, too, with interesting names. Of my many favorites is a horse named "Pair A Dice", an Arabian mare. We didn’t name her, but the original owner won her during a gambling bet. The more the merrier in this household. Peace to you and your furry friends!
Rocky, I am so sorry. Losing a friend is so hard, but you are a special person for being such a good friend and being there and not giving up like many do. Bless you with a lovely time together and I hope you make many precious memories.
Serafina has passed away. I went to get her ashes last week. Sweet little girl. Never met a cat who was so affectionate and communicative. I miss her so so much. No words to describe …
rr, I do know how you feel. We have two 17-year-old cats; one seems constantly velcroed to my hubby and the other is always following me around by day or sleeping by my pillow by night. We have flown these little guys across the Atlantic four times in the course of our military careers. Now they are showing their age - looking rumpled and crotchety, like absent-minded professors, but still very affectionate. I dread losing them, and like you I can’t imagine putting them down.
My sympathies on the loss of your cat, rr. I know how it feels. My last cat was 16 when he died and it took me 10 months before I felt able to get another one. That "other one" is now 17 with kidney disease and stones, but with a whole lot of care (including fluid infusions by yours truly), she is doing very well and still enjoying life.
