I am looking for a savvy contact who resides in the D.C. area with advice on making a move there. I have been applying for positions, but I’m finding roadblocks in regard to my current residence. I always assumed that D.C. was like New York, an area made up of men and women from all over the country. Yet the fact that I am not actually "residing" in D.C. right now is a turn off to employer. My guess is they don’t want to pay the relocation costs, (which I’m not asking for).
In my experience, there are reasons other than relocation costs that make employers skittish about hiring people who don’t have local roots in the city they are applying to:
1-There is a risk that the new hire may may end up not liking the new city—and moving back after a short time.
2-There is a risk that the applicant is not applying to the job out of genuine interest in the job itself—but more as a secure way to make the move into the city. Then once the person is in the city, they start looking around for a job that’s more desirable.
Employers invest heavily in bringing on each new employee, thousands of dollars in manpower are spent recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training, sharing company knowledge….and if after all of that investment, you end up deciding that DC is not for you….or that there’s a better job in town for you, their investment is down the tubes. Hiring people who are local, and rooted in DC is a safer bet from that perspective.
Though riskier for you, if you are committed to moving to DC, best thing might be to
a-get some freelance work you can do from your current location—to establish relationships and roots from afar
and/or b-move to DC (even rent a room in a house so you have a local address and place from which to job hunt, while keeping your current home), and look for a job when you are there.
I’m not sure what the stats are for people who relocate, and then move back home….but you might want to google search so you have a better insight into potential employer’s point of view.
I think you touched on issues at play that I may not have taken into consideration. I am always careful to apply for positions that are within my skill-set. As an H.R. Director I have seen my share of resumes from those who are over qualified and under qualified. So I know for sure it isn’t a matter of experience or skills, my resumes do not feature a photo, so it’s not race, I can only assume it is the location factor.
Your suggestions are wonderful. Especially as it relates to possibly free-lancing until I make the move. I had not thought of that. That is something I can look into and see happening. I don’t think I want to go the route of renting a room for a D.C. address, but I wonder if it is a possibility to obtain a P.O. Box in the area? I will need to investigate that. Traveling to D.C. for interview process is not an issue, but the thought of moving there without secured employment scares me to death.
Thanks for leaving me the tips and I’ll keep you posted on the results.
I am currently working in a position as a Risk Manager for public charter schools. I love my job, problem, pay. When I started the position I was well aware that it would be a year and 6 months before I would get a pay increase due to the timeing of their fiscal year. Little did I know that through out the year and 1/2 I would take on more responsibility, but that I would not get a pay increase and I know it is due to the economy and the budget deficits in the AZ budget crisis. But I really needed that increase in income as I am the only one working, husband was laid off over a year ago and his job market is primarily outsourced. He is now a fulltime student but we are drowning financially. The job market is too risky to look for other work, besides the fact that no one is paying anything.
Looking for a journalist [any media] who’d be interested in a story on domestic abuse. Not my story, but a mind map of 37 red flags. Abuse is an epidemic because the warning signs are hard to believe and hard to see UNTIL you know what to look for. Applicable to home, work, school, etc. Changing your relationships can change your life.
Make a list of women’s and men’s magazines and contact them. Abuse is a peoples issue. This is one of my areas of expertise. You can also contact newspapers. Try all media! I wish you success.
Introduce myself :-) After almost 25 years in the IT field working as an analyst, my job was dissolved. I made a decision to forge out a life doing what I love to do, rather than what paid the most money. I built a website, wrote a book, write blogs and work with cancer patients that have been told to go home and die, but so far only one has left this world. I do energy work, and hope someday all my efforts tie together into a package so I can open a holistic center. I work retail part time for exercise, with the thought getting paid to exercise made more sense than paying to exercise. lol
Relocated to New England 4 mos. ago. Left a really good job at an architectural firm. In the building/architecture field things are pretty slow. However, blanketing the area with the offer of working on an hourly basis has put my foot in the door and allowed the employers to try me out before they invest time and resources. This also gives me the opportunity to network and keep my skills sharp…Good luck you Belinda..
Hello, everyone! I’m in the process of looking for an agent for my novel, Journey Through Dark Heat! Phew! This is far more difficult than writing the book! For me it boils down to: I’d RATHER be writing! I’ve researched all the possible agents and have a short and a long list! Does anyone have any suggestions? I’d love to hear anything anyone has to say on this subject!
Hello everyone, I’m Deni, short for Deniseann. I’m in the process of writing a book about all the trials and tribulations I’ve endure in my life. It starts from my first memory of being kidnapped as a child, and goes through to today. I ask my friends and family (children) to read what I have done so far but their prejudice and like everything I write. I’m trying to find a person or place to get an honest opinion. I’m not a novas in writing, that was my main job in the Navy and when I worked for a government agency for 21 yrs. If anyone can give me an idea of whom or what to contact I’d be grateful.
Second, I’ve a real problem with three of my siblings, my older sister has made it her life’s job to put me down and embarrassed me whenever I’m near her, my brother won’t speak to me because I cannot support him in his life decisions, he’s the father of three young boys (all under 9) and he does coke and pot on a regular basis. I can’t abide by his choice so he’s cut me off from my nephews —- any suggestions would be appreciated. then there’s one of my younger sisters who just found out she’s 5 months pregnant (she’s 45) and didn’t know about it until she’d entered her 5th month, here’s the problem, she smokes pot and takes narcotics for spine injury (has a cage around her spine due to car accident), her husband wants her to abort the baby (she would never do that), her son is about to graduate from high school and her older kid even though she’s a college graduate hasn’t even tried to find a job since she graduate (2005), and says it’s because my Mother died (Mom’s been gone 5 yrs now) and she expect everyone to bend over backwards and pay her way. Hey Deni- I am a writer (new) and have written 5 children’s books about a Labrador named Clancy. I’m in the process of trying to get them published. I have a friend who is a writer and published who is going to help. I haven’t called yet, in the area we live in Clancy’s already been invited to the public schools to meet and share his stories. He’s become a local celebrity.
It sounds like you have the answers when it comes to your family. I will not participate in your insanity. End of sentence. I am not responsible for your health, bills or addictions, nor will I participate in any of the chaos you choose to bring into your life.
Once said you must stick to it! They will never take you seriously if you don’t stick to your guns.
Good Morning! I hope I am in right area! I am a 28 year old rape survivior who finally spoke out! I walkedmy Streets raising 536 petions stating perpetrator’s of rape, child molestation, and sexual assault against men pay lifetime longterm care for victims, so they no longer fall to poverty. This law Passed August 10th, 2009 and is being used here in illinois. I am fighting nationwide with coalitions to get this law named The Michelle Eppel Law passed in each State. i am going to Kentucky in December to get started. The web sight to view law is www. ilga.gov public act number 096-0218 public act 094-0397. This new law did not help me which I already knew, but it is my gift to victims so they do not fall to poverty to take care of their needs, and perpetratrator’s getting free medicines, fee counceling, free aa, or drug rehab. I wanted to put this in the rape area but did not know how! I saw speak up so posted here, and anyone can speak up if they really need to change an issue! ty Michelle

Hi Belinda…….are you making it clear in your cover letter that you are willing to pay your own relocation costs?
What causes you to think that the roadblock is your current residence location?
Hi Belinda-

I believe this is a sound approach to gaining access to potential employment and keeping your skills sharp. All the best.

HOW DO I TELL THESE SIBLINGS TO JUST LEAVE ME ALONE AND DEAL WITH WHAT EVER IT IS WITHOUT ME?????????
