Brooke Astor touched a lot of people during her 105 years of life — and 98 of them could be called to testify at her son’s trial.

The witness list, given to potential jurors in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, includes some of Astor’s dearest friends, many of whom are world-class celebrities, like Former UN ambassador Kofi Annan and his wife Nane Annan; former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and his wife Nancy; Former CEO of Chase Bank David Rockefeller; Annette de la Renta, wife of Oscar de la Renta; New York City’s public advocate Betsy Gotbaum; journalism legend Barbara Walters; and Vanity Fair’s editor-in-chief Graydon Carter.

Carter speculated on his potential role in the trial: "I assume they’re going to want to ask my opinion about what I thought her mental state was in the last ten years of her life."

Astor’s 84-year-old son, Anthony Marshall, faces jail time for allegedly misleading his late mother in order to pillage her $198-million estate. Marshall’s lawyer, Francis X. Morrissey, has been accused of aiding Marshall.

If this were’nt so serious it would be a laugh. A Who’s Who of NYC testifying over a dead woman’s inheritance.

It is a sad commentary on the dangers of growing old, that even a well-loved and wealthy woman like Brooke Astor could be so neglected in her declining years.

Some of my family has been fortunate enough to live long, healthy lives, always independent and capable, and then one day - click!  Lights out.  What a blessing. If only Mrs. Astor could have been so fortunate.

I’m always amazed at what lenghts people will go  to when money is involved.  Maybe being poor and knowing your kids love you for who you are is not so bad.  Poor of course meaning not a millionaire.
