Not Your Usual Cash-for-Clunkers Program; Get a New Greener Fridge or Dishwasher With Government Cash

Obama administration wants to give you rebates to buy new energy-efficient home appliances. What power-sucking device will you get rid of?

By now, we’ve all heard of the government’s cash-for-clunkers program — turn in your beat-up gas guzzler and get some money to go toward a more environmentally friendly vehicle. Now the Obama administration is trying a similar incentive program for another power waster: refrigerators.

Starting late this fall, you could get a rebate of $50 to $200 for buying a new, more energy-efficient fridge, washing machine, dishwasher or other household appliance. No trade-in is required, but any new appliance must bear the Energy Star seal of approval. The federal government has set aside $300 million for the program via rebate checks as part of the economic stimulus plan. Each plan will vary by state, and state plans are due October 15. No doubt this will be a boon to the appliance industry, which ABC News reports has seen a 15 percent drop in business this year. BusinessWeek says companies like Whirlpool and Electrolux have suffered the worst down cycle in the sector’s history.

To our wOw readers: Will you take advantage of these rebates of up to $200? What appliance would you be most likely to ditch for a greener version?

This blows chunks, we replaced everything we had LAST year and didn’t get a dime back.

If you bought environmentally upgraded appliances you may be able claim that on your taxes. I was able to do that with my furnace and water heater anyway, not sure about other appliances. I’m going to find out about my new front loading washing machine next year.

… forget to mention the a/c, we were able to claim that too. All are high efficiency.

You bet I would get a new dishwasher…right now my dishwasher is old and takes forever to clean and doesnt even get everything clean!  I would take this rebate and run to my local Lowes!

With your own taxes!  Another ridiculous stimulus paid for by the taxpayers which will boost sales for one month and then back to where we started.    The "Bandaid Administration" strikes again!   Yep, "Hope and Flash in the Pan Change."

What’s next?   Turning in our old shoes for new ones?

deber — Okey dokey — and just how much are we spending a day now?  And what is the interest?  Guess "Cash for Codgers" is next.  You can turn in Grandmaw and Grandpaw!

Make it stop!!!!!!!!!!

Lady Gator, the question is "What does it Matter?"   We are so far in debt now that it will be impossible to get the healthcare bill up and running this year and perhaps next year.    The Democrats have Obama to blame for healthcare not going through….because he has already spent $15 trillion.   Obama’s arrogance was blatant when he was wildly and irresponsibly spending his first 100 days in office.   He was "feeling the love."  He thought anything he proposed and put in front of the American people would be a cake walk.    So he kept spending.   Now we get to the reason why most democrats voted for him and that is healthcare reform and our country is broke.   The stimulus failed…the Cash for Clunkers was poorly run and Cap and Trade will never leave the House floor.   He is not "feeling the love" now.     And he is in trouble.    He has positioned our country to face inflation the first of next year because of his "narcissistic" personality.   He thought he had a pass to posture as  "ruler."     Wrong.

The polls tell the story.

OBAMANOMICS NOT WORKINGWELL, GEE, WHY IS THAT?

"The Obama administration on Tuesday acknowledged that Obamanomics, the dismal science of spending other people’s money as fast as possible, honed with ward bosses and union kingpins on Chicago’s South Side, has failed.

They did so, not in so many words and probably without knowing it, while hammering Americans with a devastating and demoralizing one-two blow — one a sucker punch, the other below the belt.
With the sycophants in the Obama press corps distracted while rubbing elbows with the Obamas and other rich folk on the Vineyard, the O Team threw their sucker punch: officially announcing that the federal budget deficit next year will be nearly 20% more than in their first forecast made just last May, and over the next ten years will be two trillion dollars more than they had predicted.
That’s two million million dollars more than Obama had forecast. Just 90 days ago. "
Oops.
Even ballpark hunches should be closer than that. There’s more…

deber b — The Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA) - an industry group that represents auto dealers in the New York Metro area, said that half of its members left the government program "Cash for Clunkers" before its expiration date.   They stated that dealers simply could not afford to offer rebates to their customers and then bankroll their businesses on government promises.  They found that big government is slow, inefficient and seldom keeps its promises.

The President of (GNYADA) said that the dealers have only been reimbursed for about 2 percent of the rebates they’ve given out as part of this program.

Deburca - if that holds true for the rest of the country would that mean that American Auto Dealers have floated a $980 million loan to the Obama Administration?  And wasn’t this to pay for the original $1 billion alloted to the program?  And, then Congress extended the program to $3 billion - so that would mean and even bigger float.

Now since 700,00 vehicles were reportedly sold for over $2.8 billion dollars, at a 2 percent reimbursement rate, auto dealers, many of them small dealerships, have loaned the Obama Administration $2.74 billion.

I thought the Obama Administration was only out to soak the rich - what about the small, family run dealerships - they will pay $1.76 billion directly out of pocket to the government, with no interest.  And what if people demand that the program be reinstated?  Doesn’t anyone in the Administration see this - it’s unbelievable if they don’t.  I see it, the money will come out of the taxpayers pockets.  Eventually the government will pay back the dealers but where will the money come from.  I guess I know that answer - us - the taxpayers.

Government handouts, no matter the cause, always cost us the taxpayers.

Lady Gator, wow, you are "on" this afternoon!   I read something abut this today and I must say that Chicago politicians are a piece of work, aren’t they?   This has to be the most embarrassing administration this country has ever seen.    Obama’s "Bandaid Administration" is making a joke out of the United States economic situation.   Common sense tells most halfway intelligent people that the TAXPAYERS are paying for their own discount.   The majority of them bought TOYOTAS.   And now, to leave the dealerships in the lurch is just so embarrassing!

How low is he in the polls today?   Go ahead, tell me, I can take it.

A few months ago, we installed new Energy Star AC/Heating, refrig, and a clothes dryer.  It was a project that we gave some thought to because our old appliances were working just fine.   I am amazed at the efficiency and the much lower utility bill each month.  Also, the newer appliances are so quiet. So, I think it’s a wonderful idea for anyone who has older appliances. Old refrigerators pull a lot of electricity.

I agree Maggie, these programs are basic common sense programs that are long overdue. They are a two-fer…. an injection into the economy that gets people spending their money AND a boost to the environment at the same time!

DeBúrca obj
… actually a tree-fer… not only do these types of programs stimulate spending AND help the environment, but the efficiency of the new appliances helps people save money over time too.
