How do you define success?

Liz Smith Says Success Is Being a wOw Woman

Well, the great Peggy Lee said it best: "Success is loving your work." As most of us have to work to live, we better do something we like. I believe it was Cynthia McFadden’s father, Warren, who opined, "Anyone can have a job he doesn’t like!"

Success is a lot of other things as well. It’s "doing your best" … "doing the right thing" … being generous and open-handed … congratulating others and wishing them well.

I have been made so happy and energetic by my association with the women of wOw that I now define myself as a “success” for having been invited to join this gang.

Candice Bergen: Love What You Do

Who knows. I agree with Lizard that having a job you love is the ultimate luxury. And success.

Success According to Sheila Nevins

Sleeping without aids. Excited about whatever work you do. Self-assessment that is positive. Encouraging younger staff to not be afraid to talk back and disagree.

Joan Ganz Cooney Defines Her Own Success

Each person must define what success is to him or her. It certainly has something to do with feeling satisfaction that one’s job has been well done and was worth the candle.

As usual, reading your posts has been a treat, great question and great responses, thank you Wowsisters :)  (Joan, you are such a treasure and Suzanne, you blew me away).  I’ve always liked this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"The definition of success—To laugh much; to win respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one’s self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition.; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—this is to have succeeded."

Success is Loving your Family, Loving Life and Loving what you do no matter what is. That is what my grandfather believed.

Success?   Road map? Flashlight? Shinguards? Batteries? GPS? Manners?

Enlightenment doesn’t care how you get here or there?

Defies definition?   Probably….

Success is always about the issue at hand, moreso than the person. The audience that applaudes an issue is the mark required to define a moment in civilizations progress.

One of the nicest compliments I ever have rec’d was from my niece, who when I was bewailing my frequently unemployed actress status - said to me "But you ARE a success.  You have a very happy life!"  True.  And as the bard said, "All’s well that ends well…" so more work as a character actress than an ingenue is a blessing!

Balance. A love of work, the ability to find time to be creative in any manner that makes you happy (and I do believe we all carry that within us,) being in touch with humanity, and the ability to take sadness-sorrow-discontentment-anger and turn it into something positive that keeps you moving forward and doesn’t stall you into despair.

Looking at my daughter and realizing that she surpassed all my expectations as a human being, a professional, and a citizen of the world makes me feel happy and successful at the same time.

Right next in line are the wonderful friends who have been very loyal and supportive for many years….

If you discover your purpose…accept it…and fulfill it…that to me is  supreme success.
