Joan Ganz Cooney on the Changing Landscape for High-End Designers
In response to: Do you think Christian Lacroix filing for bankruptcy protection is a harbinger for other fashion houses?
In this kind of economic downturn, it’s hard to predict what will happen to the fashion houses. It seems unlikely that another Valentino will emerge nor even another Bill Blass or Oscar de la Renta. They depended on very wealthy clients, First Ladies and something called society, which no longer exist. God knows our new First Lady is of no help to high-end designers. Now only movie actresses can get any attention for designer clothes and there aren’t enough occasions featuring them to create new star designers.

I applaud our First Lady Michelle Obama for having good sense, values, individuality and class not to be dictated to and not to become an ATM machine for snobby priviledged elitists designers!
I doubt if these wealthy persons are hurting like the average working Joe! … Why should our First Lady Michelle Obama worry about their pockets by purchasing only their overly priced RAGS? … We all have choices! Hey, for those who are concerned about the struggling Oscar De La Rentas I suggest you spend … spend … spend to take up First Lady Michelle Obamas slack!
Besides, she has worn many designers ! … Perhaps, some feathers are ruffled because she has not worn only the preditable chosen few!
