Joan Ganz Cooney: We're the Female Power

Joan Ganz Cooney
I think advertisers are well aware of female power in puchase decisions and don’t need my advice. Where they are latecomers is to the market comprised of women over 50. The population is aging and youth may not rule as powerfully as advertisers have assumed for many years.

YES!! I have been noticing in reference to two prominent talk shows that individuals who win prizes on the shows are all under the age of 40 (most seem to be in their 30s). (The contests I am speaking of are primarily entered on the internet). It never ceases to amaze me. I have mentioned it to my husband, that I feel it is no coincidence. On the websites they have your age info and I have felt for ages that when certain people are selected to win their demographics are checked, it is happening way too often to not be a coincidence. I am 53 and watch these two shows religiously and know others that do as well. I am sure a large portion of the viewing audiences are 45 and over but yes they do seem to be catering to a much younger audience, I used to think it was just me aging but I am now not so sure.

It’s because the people making these decisions, whether it’s contests or commercials, are probably under 50, and they can’t imagine that we have anything to say. Their perception is that we sit around reminiscing about our glory days! I publish Goldivas, an internet magazine for women over 50 - http://www.goldivas.com/ - and, when I mention that to women in the target group, the response is enthusiastic, but if I mention to younger people, I often get a puzzled look - "huh?"

Caren,

Had you considered that most over-50 women might be reluctant to enter the contests because you have to share your personal information and older women are less willing to do so?  Can’t win the contest without entering your name, address, birthdate and often more than that-I know I won’t do it.  I launched a website to createa social network for 50+ folks a couple of years ago (blinxi.com) and most of the people my age (60)I mentioned it to were freaked out about adding personal data.

This is a very sexist and ageist society we live in! … Advertisers are missing the ball! … They are clueless! … I think there are often young folk in authority positions who are clueless, lack information and experience! … Persons who are only interested in appeasing and pleasing their peer group!

In their ignorance and arogance they ignore the obvious and often look through older persons as though they do not exist. Youth never acknowledging that they will one day become who we are today.

We older folk need to vote for products with our money and let advertisers know we refuse to be ignored! … You must respect me and adhere to my wishes or you will not benefit form my money!
