Joan Ganz Cooney's Hopes for the Art World

Joan Ganz Cooney
So far, I think the market is holding but who knows what the future will bring if this recession drags on. I hope there is an influx of creative types but I don’t know why a severe recession would cause a flowering of creative activity.

Struggling unemployed or underemployed people need to fill their time and release their emotions. Having your world turned upside down will force you to think creatively unless you just give up.

Creative expression, for those who produce art and for those who observe art, can often be a welcome focus away from difficulties in life. Those who depend on selling art, in order to pay the bills, may have a different perspective on the impact of the recession from those who, in order to pay the bills, buy admission to an art museum instead of purchasing a work of art.

In my case, I’m thinking of every possible talent/ability I have as a potential for another revenue stream. Art? Yes. I’m doing pencil portraits from neighbor’s and friend’s favorite photos for free (marketing) or for under $100 each, many for less when no frame — plus (see my avatar) I’m setting up a product line of pen-and-ink stationery accessories, such as my book plates. I’m also thinking "creatively" in other areas: stockpiling crocheted items for sale next fall and winter (I crochet for an hour or so, instead of reading, to help me get to sleep at night.) … going through my extensive home library to see if there is any potential for auction or just to go to the used book store to get $1 each. … also working on a family bread recipe (trying to figure out nutritious and unique additions that work) and perfecting my organic triple-chocolate cookie … No telling what if anything will come out of all this …. Creative? I’m tryin’.
