Julia Reed: Far Less Wimpy Bargaining on Behalf of Others Than for Herself
In response to: What kind of negotiator are you?
I am a major wimp and the worst negotiator in the history of the world, and I get worse as I get older. The last time I was ballsy in my demands, I worked for a newspaper in Florida. My father coached me, and I had him on hold on my phone in case I started to cave. I can’t stand to ask for stuff and I give everything away. Thank God I’ve got a great agent (Binky Urban) or I swear I’d probably write books for free. I think I got two raises that were more than, like, two percent in the entire time I worked for Vogue. Lately, I’ve had to be raising money in earnest for the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, where I’m board chair, and I’ve found that I’m far more comfortable in that role. It’s a cause way bigger and a lot more important than me.
