Liz Smith: These Artists Ain't Starving

Liz Smith
Oh, please – the art world will recover. It has endured famines, floods, volcanoes, wars and earthquakes but people won’t stop creating art and eventually others will come back to buying, collecting or rejecting it.

It’s not just artists and dealers who are underselling to make fast money. And, anyway, what a great ride they had for about 30 years! I can’t stand all this griping now that we are out of an immoral, greedy, money-exalting economy.

Right on Liz!! I agree with you completely. The next few months, or maybe even years, are gonna be tough, but hey! It’s what happens when money grubbers are allowed uncontrollable power and then suddenly find that the game is over. We’ll weather this just fine and maybe finally see a re-emergence of a true middle class, not the 10%-90% hierarchy that’s in place now!

Any luck, Liz, in getting some of those historical photos of NYC from that massive book published on WoW?!

LOL. I  hadn’t thought of the question that way, and of course that’s what the wOw editor meant … You are right on, Liz!

Sorry, beg to differ, Liz.  Columbus Symphony is in danger of closing down at any moment.  You did see the NYTimes article about Philadelphia Philarmonic today?  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/12/arts/music/12orch.html?th=&emc=th&pagewanted=all  Metropolitan Opera is having to adjust its schedule because of the expense of production, museums are having to reduce staff and hours.  Scholarship programs are in jeopardy in Universities all over the country.

Most artists aren’t in NYork making oodles of money.  Local theatre companies and orchestras, ballets and opera companies perhaps don’t have the wealth that is available where you are.

We, out here, in the rest of America, that develop funding for the Arts are worried, we are very worried indeed.

Absofreakinlutely agree with you Liz! I say that those of us in the U.S are no more entitled to wealth and happiness than people in Kenya for cryin out loud. we are SUCH a bunch of whiners sometimes! I can’t remember which republican got in trouble this election year for saying the US had become populated with whiners but that was on comment this democrat could get behind…

Thanks for this perspective! Arts organizations will be disproportionately affected unfortunately, but creativity and cultural appreciation will never die!

The art world will survive. I am concerned about the everyday citizen who is trying to put food on their tables. What  do I care about some paintings hanging in someones home ,unless the  owners  are going to sell  the art  and donate the money to the hurting poor. I appreciate art. However, the priorities for  Americans at this time in our history is how to feed, maintain employment, clothe and keep a roof over our heads.

P.S. The arts are very important! I believe it is important to support the arts. Artists will always create. I am looking at the arts from a logical perspective. My question is what comes first food on your table or the pretty painting you saw in the store window? What comes first pampers for your baby or the ticket to the movie theater? I’m addressing the hurting pockets of everyday Americans with priorities. There’re hundreds of artists who are pure of heart . There are also hundreds who are self absorbed egotistical cash whores pimping the public. Persons with no morals or ethics.
