Liz Smith Was Always the Breadwinner

Liz Smith
I always earned more money than my spouses and they were both glad of it. When I worked for New York Newsday, I was the highest-paid print journalist in the world and believe me, all of my lovers, friends, employees and enemies benefited from that. Now that I am the lowest-paid (or totally unpaid) print journalist, I don’t feel I am so popular. But when it comes to money – "Easy come, easy go!"

Dear Liz - Great that you had secure spouses who were not threatened by your success! You are VERY, VERY popular and much-loved, and this has nothing to do with money - you are right up there on my desert-island-companion list! We all followed you to wOw like the Pied Piper!

Going back to your recent posting on Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell and all the great ‘old’ stars, did you see the swell news that Warners have a new dvd-on-demand site, warnerarchive.com where they are releasing all their specialist-appeal back titles?  Apparently Debbie Reynolds is going on tv to publicise it, as her movie The Mating Game is in the first batch..

Liz, I don’t think we are going to ever ever worry over your "popularity" as - with my own birthday coming up - I have seen there is more love and caring for you in the vast number of cards and gifts that drifted your way on that day than any of the rest of us could ever ever dream of.  You GLOW and are a magnet and always will be!

You are still the Queen of Gossip! Stop underestimating  yourself! You are still extremely popular!

I was more educated than my husband and he resented it! I quit a job because he did not want me to  work. I later learned he wanted absolute control. later, in the marriage he demanded that I return to the workforce. He made more money but I had to pay him to assist me if I needed help. We were legally married on paper. However, I fel t like I was single! There was no support on any level. He was very insecure!

I made a vow to never be in that position again and to always support myself! Liz, remember Billie Holidays words"God Bless The Child That Has His Own!"

One good thing about the turn in events in your career, Liz, is the response from your fans.  Evidently, we’d follow you anywhere!  As to the partner who benefits from your larger salary, nothing wrong in that, if that partner carries his/her weight in other ways - cooking, housekeeping, foot-rubs; you get the idea :)

Liz Smith, I saw your interview in ‘Newsweek’, accompanied by a fabulous photo.  Your candor provides such a departure from the norm of the times. When asked why did the ‘Post’ fire you……’I don’t think they liked me.  I didn’t suit their standards.’  Yes, no passive voice, assuming the role of a victim, fiddling around with some needless analysis. ‘They just told me to get out.’ But what makes you the role model you are, not only to Sheila Nevins but to all of us is that you turned that into a positive, ‘In fact, getting fired at 86 was really exciting’.  Brava, Liz Smith, brava.

Peace and grace

Liz … we - who are in "the know" - had already heard through the grapevine that Hef already had his feelers — and God knows what else he has out - for "the older woman".  He was quoted as saying: "For a while I thought there was much to be said for the youthful exuberance of the nubile blondes.  But lately I have even looked "done in" to put it mildly, and half deaf by the bouncing and screaming of my three girlfriends, indulging in all-nighter pillow fights on my bed while waiting for me to perk up.  My doctor was brutally honest in telling me that I have been missing out for more years to mention — as the best lover is the older woman, well kept up and blonde, of course, having the light touch, the experience that I have never dreamed of .  . as well as the need for the 10PM bedtime that I privately crave."

And no sooner had Hef’s physician given him the perscription for years of wonderful living than that living, breathing, gorgeous Liz Smith was finally free from that gossip beat and was looking for greener fields.  According to Hef, he has already texted her with the "come to Papa" turn-on.  The word is that Liz is already packing … and we already believe that her next book direct from The Mansion has had bidding rights already in the astronomical range.

That Liz .  .  . that foxy, fast lady.  I think we better stay tuned as LA is due to have its temperatures at simmering this summer or even sooner .  .  .
