Liz Smith, Explorer of America

Liz Smith
I haven’t sworn off vacations, but I am sure not looking to fly overseas right now or stay in luxury hotels as in the past. I would be perfectly happy with a visit to Niagara Falls, which I’ve never seen; to Yellowstone, which I’ve never seen; and to just going to the Connecticut River Valley or the Hamptons of Long Island and vegging out! Suddenly – America first!

Oh Liz, You must see Niagara Falls…..When I was 7 years old in 1939 My parents took my little sister and my older brother on a 3 month trip across the United States. Two Highlights were the Worlds Fair and Niagara Falls.I can still remember riding on the ‘Maid of the Mist’ in our Yellow slickers……..I can remember the feel of the Mist’s falling on my skin, a little 7 year old girl………..what a memory.  It’s a MUST Liz.

I love that you are here every day……….You are a very bright spot in my day.  Reading your column is like taking a little vacation in itself.

Dona,

I agree with you wholeheartedly! Liz must wear that yellow slicker (which will smell awful) and get "misted"! Not to mention the awe she will feel. I don’t know about your trip Dona, but we saw it from the Canadian side and we were told it was the better side to see the Falls from. Now, if Liz prefers the American side, so be it… just go, Liz! Go!

Good for you Liz. I will not be vacationing at all. I am self-employed and I can’t miss any opportunity of work. Especially in summer, that’s when (i hope!) we get bz.

We had our "big" trip last year - a memorable Hawaiian week-long cruise (his first ever cruise!) around the islands (that I think we are still paying for) and since WE too own our own business - it will be nose to the grindstones this year! But my kids are throwing me a blow-out birthday party next month - so I’ll make that a vacation/celebration!

Liz - if you have a chance to visit Yellowstone, don’t let it pass you by! You will be overcome with respect for Nature’s spectacular displays, and if you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself standing not too many feet away from a bison!

Maurine,

I’ve been to Yellowstone 3 times and Wyoming at least 7 or 8 times —and I agree with you.  Wyoming, the majestic Tetons, and the Wind River Valley are God’s country.  I absolutely love it out there.  Every time I’m out there, I feel the weight of the world lift right off my shoulders.
