Marissa Mayer: Google Squared 'Pushes Search in an Entirely Different Direction' (Video)
On Tuesday, Google announced a series of new search products to keep their competitive edge in the innovative world of technology.
The new offerings include Google Search Options, Rich Snippets and an astrology-related Android app, says PCMag.com, but the one garnering the most attention seems to be Google Squared.
Google Squared takes searching the Internet to a whole new level. The advanced service compiles information from several Web pages and organizes them into a table like a spreadsheet. It’s a departure from what Google Search is today, which presents pages and pages of links to original sources.
"It really pushes search in an entirely different direction," Marissa Mayer, vice president of search and user experience at Google, said during a presentation at Google’s Mountain View headquarters.
Squared will be available by the end of the month in Google Labs. In the YouTube video below that was posted on TechCrunch.com, a person demonstrates how Google Squared will work. A search for "roller coasters" sorts results by name, image, description, height, length and number of inversions. But sometimes the search engine gets confused. A search for "spaceships" turns up a Corvette and a missile carrier. Kinks such as these are still being worked out and may be fixed before it becomes public.
