Maytag Mayhem: Company Recalls 1.6 Million Fridges

Maytag Corp., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is recalling about 1.6 million refrigerators that pose a serious fire risk.
According to Maytag’s official website, a component in certain refrigerators aren’t working properly and can cause serious damage. The electrical failure is the fridge’s relay — the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor — can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
The recall includes certain Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. They have model and serial numbers printed on a label located on the top middle or left upper side of the refrigerator liner and have the following model and serial number combinations:
On side-by-side refrigerators, serial numbers ending in AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, CA, CC, CE, CG, CJ, CL, ZB, ZD, ZF, ZH, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ, and model numbers beginning with ARS, CS, JC, JS, MS, MZ and PS.
On top-freezer refrigerators, serial numbers ending in AA, AC, AE, AG, AJ, AL, AN, AP, AR, AT, AV, AX, ZK, ZM, ZQ, ZS, ZU, ZW, ZY and ZZ, and model numbers beginning with AT, CT, MT and PT.
All recalled refrigerators were manufactured in the United States and were sold at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from January 2001 through January 2004 for between about $350 and $1600. Maytag has received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
Consumers should immediately contact Maytag to determine if their refrigerator is included in the recall and to schedule a free in-home repair. Maytag Corp. says consumers should not return the refrigerator to the retailer where it was purchased. Oh, no…I just bought a french door. Thank you so much; I will check with my dealer. Maytag had a dishwasher recall about 2 years ago, and I was one of the "lucky" ones. I only knew it because it was in yahoo news, and was one of the most dis-organized processes I ever went through. And, when they did finally get someone out here that was approved by their people, he didn’t install the new piece correctly, and I ended up calling my dealer anyway to fix it correctly. The recall was worded so that it sounded like it was going to catch fire any minute, and, of course, nothing was wrong at all.
Oh, if you are one of the lucky ones, best to use the email above; unless they learned from the Great Dishwasher Saga, the toll-free # was hopeless.
I have an Amama french door …. made by Maytag, and I love it !!!
Let me give you a hint about a problem that is common. Our ice maker stopped working and there was a funny grinding noise. We called the repair guy, we get a service plan on ALL of these new appliances because they really are a giant computers with sheves, and he told us how to fix it. Sometimes an ice cube gets caught in the little do-hicky that rotates the ice into the tray, you can see it if you get down on the floor and look closely at the ice maker. The grinding noise is the rotator trying to go around. Eventually the defrosting cycle will melt the stuck cube and it will go through. The service guy told me to tale a long wooden spoon and whack the ice cube that is stuck and Voilá, it is fixed !! It has happened about 4 times in the 3 years we have had the refrigerator.
There, I’ve just saved you some money !
I recently had a service call on my Whirpool Washing machine (10 yrs old), the service man told me to NEVER replace the machine, the new ones are crap, especially the Maytag front loader, just fix the old one … sad state of affairs !!
EKA, thank you for the advice. This is why I always buy local. I have dealth with the same company since 1963, and they give wonderful personal service. That is where I went to get the Maytag French Door 2 months ago, when I decided it was time as my Whirlpool had been purchased in ‘91. It will work indefinitely down in the basement; I kept it. Because I had missed a sale by 3 days, they gave me this one at the sale price. The icemaker is in the top, so it is easy to see in. And, there is water/ice available on the door. But, I will keep your ice advice in mind.
My Whirlpool twins were purchased around ‘93, I think, and I was wondering what to do about them. I sure don’t want to wait until I end up with a water pool before I purchase new ones, but at the same time, I have never had a moment’s problem with the washer…uh-oh! Murphy’s Law; should never have said that.
Personally, I prefer American appliances; they are far more simple than the European and also they don’t weigh so much or use so much energy. The "professional" ones like SubZero and the huge stoves are much too heavy for most kitchen floors, too expensive, and put out much too much energy for most of us. A fancy appliance doesn’t make a good cook…
I bought a Whirlpool washer/drier set in ‘87 (locally, my preference too). The dryer squeals a bit these days (I think a belt has gotten a bit polished over the years), but otherwise they are still going strong.
There is one thing I would warn about: when I finally changed the plastic flue on the dryer for a sheet-metal one, I found that lint had gotten past the lint filter and into the works. I clean the filter for every load, but over the years a little leakage had built up to a lot of lint.
For those like me, who keep a dryer for many years, I would recommend taking the back off and cleaning out the accumulation once in a while. Having a gas dryer, I consider this a real safety issue.
I’m sorry, when you said French Door, I thought you got the one with the french doors on top and freezer on the bottom .. hence having to get on the floor to peer in !
I wish you a long, glitch-free life !
