Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm: 'Buy Chrysler, Buy American'

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm is very cheery about Chrysler’s bankruptcy.

The Obama administration recently announced tough measures to make sure two of the nation’s biggest automakers stay afloat. But Granholm — whose state is suffering from the sinking auto industry and Detroit’s economic malaise — said Chrysler’s bankruptcy is a good thing.

"The president made very clear this is not a bankruptcy but a liquidation," she said on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe," adding that consumers should be more confident now, since Chrysler products will essentially be backed by the U.S. government. That means a "stronger, greener, leaner" Chrysler that everyone can benefit from.

"If people are considering buying a car, buy Chrysler, buy American. Buy something your taxpayer dollars" are helping fund, Granholm urged.

She said she’s confident Chrysler can keep its 54,000 employees and add even more once its deal with Fiat goes through, since the latter company has committed to bringing thousands of jobs to the U.S."That’s what it’s all about — building cars in America that will help us get rid of our reliance on foreign oil," Granholm added.

But the Chrysler bankruptcy may not be a done deal anytime soon. Bloomberg reports that a group of Chrysler’s secured lenders calling itself Chrysler’s non-TARP lenders, is seeking to block the plan to auction its business. But still, Chrysler remains optimistic, and may even be offering incentives for you to come in and test drive a car and see what it has to offer. The manufacturer is launching an ad campaign to convince customers and potential buyers that the company is alive and well. Print and TV ads started today with the tagline, "We’re building a better car company … Come see what we’re building for you."

I think Gov. Granholm is wonderful and she is dead on in terms of encouraging Americans to buy American. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen, given that almost 80 percent of what we live off of is foreign produced.

It’s a nice idea to buy American but there are so many products from other countries that we like so I think although a nice idea it may not necessarily work.

I haven’t bought an American car in over 25 years and I don’t intend to buy one now to stimulate the auto industry.   I buy the German "car."

The only problem with the "Buy American" Sloganeering is that many of the part used in autos are made in other countries.

Until American cars are proven to be just as well-running and efficient, then I’ll consider buying American.  Until that time, I neither have the time nor the money to make monthly visits to my mechanic.

"Buy American" sounds wonderful. But not if it’s the same old American cars that are built to be replaced every five to seven years and that use more gas than the "foreign" competitors, and require more maintenance and repair than any other car around. American cars must be as good or better than anyone else’s if there is to be a real recovery, don’t ya think?

Out of the five "American" built vehicles we owned three were lemons (the worst vehicles ever) and the other two were Ford (two of the best ever vehicles).  Now we own a 70% percent American Nissan (apparently built in the Midwest) and a small fuel efficient Toyota (we couldn’t afford a hybrid).  As all the other posters say buy American is a noble idea (as is comunism and socialism) it just doesnt’ work in practice, because people are greedy and want something for nothing.  That’s why the American auto makers are bankrupt, because the unions practically run them and if the workers produce a shoody product, the union ensures they still have a job.  If you want a worker’s paradise there is always the Soviet Union … oh, wait they are bankrupt too.

Right now, I own a nine year old Ford Mustang, automatic. (Love my car and surprisingly get 30 miles to the gallon) It’s paid for!! The next car I buy, will be one that gets good gas mileage and/or is hybrid or hydrogen (which, I believe is what is going to turn out to be the best energy alternative). I will not simply by American if those cars don’t start making the kind of cars we should/need to be driving. America needs to wake up to the energy needs of our planet earth, and quickly. My purchases will be from those companies who are working hard to meet these needs.

I have never owned a foreign car, since my first Chevy Camaro, 1968, yellow, black vynal top ( A beauty, wish I still had it ! ), I have had Chevys and now Jeeps and never had a problem with any of them.

But after this restructuring, and with whoever is left standing, if they don’t come forward with a real revolutionary design, something efficient and eco-friendly, I will desert them. They are responsible for their own downfall, I’ve been loyal, but but I’m about done !!
