Missingmoney.com Tells You if You're Entitled to a Piece of $33 Billion in Unclaimed Property

Government books indicate there is $33 billion in unclaimed property that sits idly waiting for its owners to claim it, The Wall Street Journal reports. Thirty-three billion dollars — that’s a lot of money — about one-fifth of the AIG bonuses, actually.

So, how do you know if you have a stash of forgotten or unclaimed assets? Now, with the glories of the Internet, websites are able to help you track your money — or a relative’s assets — that may have gone missing. Most of these Web services are free, too.

Unclaimed property can include stocks, mutual funds, bonds, dividends, uncashed checks, refunds, trust distributions, insurance payments and much more — including items in safe-deposit boxes that you may have completely forgotten … (Remember your husband’s coin collection?)

If you do discover that you have unclaimed assets, you’ll have to prove your identity. If you’re entitled to someone else’s stash, you’ll have to prove that you’re the legal heir.

To find out if a state has any of your money, visit the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators’ website, at unclaimed.org. From there, you can access an individual state’s records. Another free government service is Missingmoney.org, or Missingmoney.com, also from NAUPA, which is easy to use and includes records from most states.

Good luck, ladies!

I clicked on the links to check this out.  I didn’t find anything for me (RATS!!) but I did find some money for my mother and my auntie! All totaled I located a couple thou for them!

Plus, it gives you a map of the US and Canada and our US territories, so if you have lived in more than one state/province/territory you can check all places to see if you have any money coming to you.  I think everyone should check it out!  There’s no charge to check it out and you don’t have to give any information like social security numbers or anything.

Good luck everyone, and I hope that some of you find some extra cash! I know we all could use it!  :-)

I found missing money, from decades ago, when I lived in Texas.  I filled out the form, provided proof of who I was and expected the $63.00 to be sent.  BUT oh, no.. they needed the documentation from that time.. 1976..   I am not that much of a pack rat to have kept something in a file from 33 years ago.

They can keep the $63.00.
