Sandra Herold's Assets Frozen | 05/06/2009 2:20 pm

Owner of Chimp That Mauled Friend Gets $10M of Assets Frozen

Sandra Herold, owner of Travis, the chimp who nearly killed Charla Nash, is ordered to freeze $10 million of assets as lawsuit proceeds.

The owner of the chimpanzee that nearly killed a Connecticut woman will have $10 million of assets frozen – in response to the victim’s lawsuit.

Charla Nash and her family filed a $50 million lawsuit against Sandra Herold, the owner of Travis, the 200-pound chimpanzee that mauled Nash on February 16. Nash reportedly lost her lips, nose, eyelids, hands and suffered brain damage. She will have to undergo years of surgical procedures, none of which come cheap.

Travis, the chimp, was shot to death by Stamford Police when they responded to a frantic 9-1-1 call.

Thanks for posting this story wOw, after the initial story ran I didn’t really follow-up (as I usually do) on this and therefore had no idea the extent of her injuries. How sad. 10M means nothing, it could have been 20, 30 or 50 million, that won’t make Charla Nash whole again.

Wild animals are just that, wild and they may never erupt but, as this shows, yes they can and do on occasion. We don’t do them any favors by keeping them as pets.  Even animal trainers can get attacked.  What upsets me is a perfectly healthy woman is now blind and disfigured.  What a tragedy.

That chimp’s owner has $10 million in assets? That is definitely not the impression I got when reading this story when it happened.

You and me both, DeB…I had the impression that she was very limited in her funds.  One never knows, huh?

All the money in the world will not bring back that woman’s sight, face or quality of life, and by the time the surgeries are done it may BE 10 million !  I’m surprised at the assets, she certainly wasn’t living high on the hog, but I’m glad there is money to pay for her recklessness.

Just a horrible tragic case of animal, and human abuse. Of course, our state has now banned the owning of chimps  … talk about closing the barn door after the chimp got out, SHEESH !

wowOwow failed to mention she’s also blind! … No amount of money will make her whole! … Wild beasts belong in the wild or in the zoo locked in cages!

This is a horrific story! … I wish her all the best! … God bless you dear lady!

This horror should never never have happened.  I also feel for the agony that the victim’s family is having to endure.  It sounds like she will almost have to go through as much as the face surgery woman we’ve been reading and hearing about.
