Andrea, I can’t justify my smoking, your right. I just feel the injustice to smokers is wrong, the federal gov’t just raised taxes on cig’s and so did most state gov’t. The Pres. and Govenors all said the same thing, to avoid raising property tax we will up the tax on cigs. And some states are even uping the tax on gas. Don’t we already pay way to much in taxes on GAS.
More pople drive then own homes. and county, state, federal taxes on homeowners is way to high.
but death and taxes are what we grow up to look forward too, lol
I never thought I’d hear my fathers words come out of my mouth.
I’m in a program with the VA now to quit, if all goes well I should be smoke free by July 1st.
Andrea, I’m doing good in the quit for life progam, I went from 2 pks. to one, and now only 10 a day, it’s hard but weaning is the best method I have tried today.
The injustice thing, if you do the research and numbers smokers pay a whole lot more in taxes then the non-smoker, I think they keep raising the price to force people to quit, because it’s just too damm expensive a habit. It cost more in one day for a smoker then it does for a drunk to get drunk.
And if your respectful to the non-smoker they should also be the same. It’s horrable habit and I wish to God I’d never started.
I will be saving up 130 a month when I’m done with the program,
I thank you Andrea for the support,it’s what I need to help me quit
$130 a month saved when you have quit for life. That’s a great payoff.
I’m sure your program facilitator has discussed how changing routines can help with quitting. That is, my day always began by getting up, showering, getting dressed, and having a cigarette over coffee with the paper over the breakfast table. I revised that to taking the paper outside with the coffee. A change of scenery helped me to dissociate with the cigarette.
So, if you haven’t yet, why not make the computer one of the places where smoking is forbidden?
We all wish we never started - but better to focus on how nice it’s going to be when non-smoking friends invite you to their homes and how you won’t have to be antsy for a cigarette. They will so appreciate that.
Cigarette smokers are not respectful to non-smokers by the very nature that they pollute the environment. In what way do you think they are?
I did the research a long time ago. Of course smokers pay more in taxes than non-smokers. But think about this: in spite of California’s current tax woes. we have the fewest cigarette smokers per capita and yet we have well-maintained roads. You shouldn’t worry about where the money is going to come from to refurbish roads, Deniseann……trust me, you’re not going to wake up one morning and find a bunch of pot holes on your street that become sink holes.
The sole purpose of raising the price of cigarettes is to maintain profit margins. Nothing else. The Federal goverment may mandate that the tobacco companies pay up so much to certain organizations, but the actual reason for the rising prices is solely due to greed of the tobacco companies. Decline in smoking is strictly a fall out from the increased price.
She is not "trying" to justify her smoking to anyone, least of all you. She’s saying she has made her choice to smoke - She can smoke if she wants to, she will quit if she wants to. It’s not up to you to judge.
Your choice, but at least you have the right to make it…albeit a bad choice. Although, I believe that smokers should give up taxpayer funded medical care. You smoke, you deal with the effects.
Taxpayers do not pay for my medical necessities, I’ve no cough, my lungs are clear, and I’m in the process of quiting through a program at the VA hospital. Some people drink when their stressed, others do drugs, I am addicted to cigs, and i’m fighting the good fight to quit. No one has ever in my entire life after the age of 10 taken care of me.
Deniseann….I know how hard it must be. Good luck to you, I know that you really want to be free of this addiction. I am just lucky that so far, chocolate is neither illegal…or fatal, because if it were, I would be in one hell of a pickle.
I have a friend that has tried hypnosis, the patch, nothing worked…but this book did! You might want to read, "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr.
She raves about it and for the first time ever, feels that she will remain smoke free…. good luck to you!
Kelly, thanks for the book title, I called borders to see if they had it in stock, it should be in the store by tues, I’ll check it out and if it’s something i feel will help I’ll go for it. :)
Judy, I’ve quit many times, during both pregnancy’s, during all cancer treatments, I’m not a chimney, I’ve a disorder that was originally diagnosed when I had cancer the first time IBS, it’s a horrid disorder of the intestines, it prevents you from eating many foods, you either can’t go or you can’t stop. When I’m in an episode I need something to relax me so I can get through the cramps and three hours on the pot being sick.
Most times when I do smoke,I don’t,I light it take a drag put it in the ash tray and get so busy it burns away, waste of money. But during this last go round with the colon cancer I needed something that calmed me and not put me to sleep like drugs.
It’s a bad habit and I’m in a progam now to quit, I don’t know if it’s going to work but I’m trying.

I have to strongly disagree with you about there being injustice to smokers. What about the injustice to non-smokers?
So, come on, Deniseann, make my day and be tobacco-free by the first. I’m really cheering you on.

Read about California and how stringent laws really helped reduce the amount of smokers over the years.

Keep up the good work, Deniseann.
When second hand smoke ceases to be harmful I’ll quit judging, irish bell.
By the way, Deniseann is in a program to quit smoking.
