Recessionistas: If you have sworn off vacations because of this recession, what are you doing instead?

Liz Smith, Explorer of America

I haven’t sworn off vacations, but I am sure not looking to fly overseas right now or stay in luxury hotels as in the past. I would be perfectly happy with a visit to Niagara Falls, which I’ve never seen; to Yellowstone, which I’ve never seen; and to just going to the Connecticut River Valley or the Hamptons of Long Island and vegging out! Suddenly – America first!

Candice Bergen Keeps It Simple

The older I get, the more I like to stay home. The less I like to travel. So we’re going to L.A. Thursday for ten days. Whoopee. Just to get rid of my chronic winter sniffles. Maybe London to meet my daughter, who’s in Ethiopia, whom I miss like crazy. No exotic travel plans. The last was Dubai and Ethiopia for Thanksgiving to see my daughter. That held me for a while.

We had hoped to go to Ireland this summer but it looks like we won’t be doing that now.

William Holland, in north Georgia and Wildacres near Little Switzerland, NC, offer lapidary classes on anything from mineral identification to stone cutting and stained glass silversmithing etc.  Elderhostel also offers mini classes for a week or more.

If you have a hobby check your national associations to see what might be offered in yhour area or at a central point. I once attended a large format photography class with people from across the US. You can also type in the topics you would like to learn on the computer then see if there is a local group focusing on that interest.

From one who has only had a weekend getaway in the last four years, I’m aching to go ANYWHERE! Alas, this year it’s not possible. There is an economic alternative, a place to go where you can travel any place in the world, and even back in time. I’m talking about your local genealogical library. I’m suggesting this at the risk of being self-serving, because I am a part-time library assistant, but I have seen many people over the years who leave the library with "family members" they’d never met before. Sometimes vacationing is not so much a matter of going somewhere as a matter of relaxing and learning new things about yourself. (Oh, yes, genealogy is hard work but very fulfilling.)

I would recommend Elderhostel, trips for people over 55.  We enjoyed a trip to New York, met the group, had accommodations, meals, guided tours, lectures from various local professors.  I mention it, Peggy, because my parents went on these trips years ago and their first one was to Brigham Young University to learn about genealogy.  The trips were cheaper then as they stayed in the dorms.  Anyone intereested can go their website elderhostel.org.  Trips all over the world.

Peace and grace

Beth W —-We must be on the same planet when it comes to travel — We went to Salt Lake City .  They also have an incredible library into genealogy.  I met a friend of mine.  We both found out mountains of information on our ancestry!  A very fun and informative trip.  I worte a book and sent it to all my relatives regarding our humble beginnings!  LOL

Vacation? What is that?

Living in Florida we have many visitors during the year.  They always say, "you must come visit us".  So this year, we have decided we will do just that.

First we will visit friends on Cape Cod.  We haven’t been there for years.   I love it there!  The beaches are so different from Florida.  We usually go when the crowds are gone.

We will visit my sister - she lives in the Arkansas Ozarks in the most beautiful place.  Eureka Springs.  It will actually be a family reunion.  The mountains there remind me of the North Carolina mountains.

We are meeting friends (I’ve know her since 2nd grade) in Asheville this summer for a two week stay to get away from the Florida heat.  They have rented a house.

These are our plans for now.  We will wait and see on the economy.  Also, at the present time, we are keeping a close eye on our business.  Hope we don’t have to cancel our trips!

Lady Gator, I should’ve been in the travel business instead of an interior designer.   I get very excited reading everyone’s post about possible vacation destinations!   I know Cape Cod well as I lived in MA for quite awhile.   I purchased an 1806 farmhouse on the upper cape to restore and resell.   The towns along the cape are all unique and have something different to offer.   I preferred the smaller towns such as North Falmouth, Sandwich, etc. because of the history.   I completed the restoration of that beautiful old farmhouse and put it on the market.  The day it sold I felt like a bit of my heart sold with it

"If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air…."   enoy the Cape of Cod!

‘Quaint little vilages here and there…’

My husband has a niece who lives in Barnstable, owned a restaurant called Murph’s Recession, a pub really. My husband is from Massachusetts and will be going for his mom’s 90th birthday next fall.  Ladt Gator, we have been to Rogers, Arkanasa, beautiful and not far from Eureka Springs.  I think you will have a wonderful time, very different from Florida.

Peace and grace

Beth —-OMG — my husband and I have been to "Murph’s Recession".  We had a ball.  I guess we have always loved pubs.  Is it closed now?  Gosh, we had so much fun there, met so many neat people.  Just traded accents —LOL  What great people!

Eureka Springs is a very different, unique place.  I love St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church - you enter the church through the steeple.  All of the houses and hotels are built on the side of the mountains.  My sister’s place is located on a high winding mountain road and when you walk onto her back deck there is nothing but a lot of space below!  It is incredible.  Once you’ve been there you understand why they call if "little Switzerland".   I love the art shops, the artisians — in fact I have some beautiful pottery from a shop in Eureka Springs.    I love mountains, I miss them , am now living here as a "flatlander".

We have been to Rogers, Arkansas.  There is a restaurant there - can’t remember the name - has the best southern fried chicken this side of my mamas!.  LOL

We have spent so much time in the high sierras in California, the Rockies in Colorado, the Grand Tetons and the Canadian Rockies - last year we took the train across the Canadian Rockies - I would recommend that trip to everyone.  It was restful, the scenery was majestic and, the people we met were out of this world.

Deber, you sound like such a traveler…I wish I was more of that type of person.  I am happy going to places I know.  Not too up on going somewhere that I dont know, probably bc the places I want to see I have to fly to get there and I dont like to fly…This year we also plan on doing a lot of boating on the Rappahannock, my sister is buying a boat and one of my husbands good friends owns about 10 jet skis (spelling)…My husbands sister is an interior designer.

deber — I love North Falmouth — so quiet - so quaint - so unique. I love to just laze around, head for the beach and read a nice smutty novel! The people there are great! And, I’m sure, since all of us are tennis buffs, we will have several games of doubles. I’m looking forward to a few days there!

Ooooh, our paths have surely crossed at some time, deber! My parents had a cottage in Sandwich right on the beach near the Canal. We even lived there one winter. I spent 7th grade at the Henry T Wing School - at that time, it housed K-12!

I am using my frequent flier miles and my hotel points to "pay" for an island vacation for my family.  One week on Grand Cayman, relaxing in the sun with a stack of good books and lots of sunscreen sounds like heaven for me and a good payback for all of the business travel I do.
