Question of the Day | 03/23/2009 11:00 pm

The new iPod Shuffle is even smaller and holds more songs than before. Does it tempt you? If not, is there any gadget that does?

Joan Juliet Buck, Judith Martin and the wOw women share their thoughts on the newest in newfangled gadgets

The iPod Doesn't Tempt Joan Ganz Cooney

No, the iPod doesn’t tempt me. I still use a Sony Walkman with one disc in it. I’m a little tempted at times to get a BlackBerry, but then I remember I might become like all those addicted people I know who can’t conduct a five-minute conversation without checking their BlackBerry to see who’s e-mailed them. So I think I’ll stick with my cell phone, which I use only for outgoing calls.

Judith Martin Sees the Future of iPod, iPhone

Since I can’t multitask, even to the extent of listening to music while doing something else, the iPod isn’t tempting. But now I hear that the iPhone will gain the ability to say where it is if it has been lost or stolen, and I’m excited about the possibility that one day it might tell me where I left my glasses.

The iPod Shuffle sounds like a dance number I forgot to learn. I do not sit around listening to music so I have never had an iPod and never will and if I want to hear music, I’ll just crank up the old Victrola.

(Kidding!) I hate gadgets and I can’t concentrate on writing when music is playing.

Joan Juliet Buck: Trust Your Gadgets

I have the one from before and it’s so small, I don’t trust the fucker. I like the one the passport immigration man had at JFK on Friday — the nice, sturdy, first-generation one that you can put at your desk and not mistake for a delicatessen receipt.

Jane Wagner Gives In to Temptation …

Oh, yes! I’m tempted, in fact, I’m going to get one. I’m tempted by so many gadgets — I just heard you can listen to the radio on your BlackBerry. That’s tempting. In fact, I seem most tempted by things I don’t really need. Even gadgets from infomercials — I’m not so guilty when I buy things now, because I feel I’m helping the economy in some way. I can think of myself as my own personal stimulus package to help out in this dark downturn.

A "pint size" gadget made of plastic that actually "tempts" me?  Has the world gone wild - or have I - as in "the temptation" department, and I am going to be really honest with you all, I always have - always will - like a REAL size man.

Honestly, gals, when I want to "be entertained", a piece of plastic just doesn’t enter my thought processes at all.  Aren’t all of you who think smaller is better being just plain brainwashed?  When I want to hear sweet thoughts or even music in my ear, I am just plain spoiled by a warm breath that comes with it??  Am I alone here??  When I’m in the mood for love — which occurs more often than I would like to say — am I really dumb enough to think that the Sinatra version playing on the new iPod Shuffle is going to DO it???

And let’s be honest here.  It must get to be a bit much to have to trade one in for a newer model at six month increments, when we who have been around for a bit longer know that if we have shopped around sufficiently in the first place, the real thing can get better with age, doncha think????

Just my own thoughts, hastily written I assure you, as I am on my way down to candlelight and wine … and whatever comes after.  The word "plastic" isn’t even in my vocabulary!!!!

Also, hastily written.  Joan Larsen you have never been “righter”. (I know you’re a “writer”, but this time I mean, “more right”).  Hope you enjoy your candlelight and wine … and whateve.  But, be careful, just don’t slip off your chair and land flat on you back , etc., etc.

Lauriate … you make me laugh … and my husband had to read this one (everyone loves him as he is perfection and fun!!) and said to tell you that after I return from what looks like a fun birthday lunch with the gals, he has our favorite champagne cooling now … and - he added (just for you) - that after we have many toasts which usually have us "melting" that "if I don’t slip off my chair he is going to be very disappointed!"  :-)  :-)  Reports will follow.  Joan

I agree with Joan.

I do not like these new generation tiny-tiny wireless gadgets.  The fact is that new software languages are being written faster than I’m writing my comments, which will make today’s itsy-bitsy gadgets as obsolete as the pagers and compact CD players which were the rage twenty/ten years ago [respectively].

And frankly, I’m tired of anything plastic … with one exception.  I like the Kindle 2, which my son has promised to get me for my birthday.  For practical reasons I’ll use it a lot when I travel.  Yet, the Kindle 2 will never replace an actual book, no more than the iPod Shuffle will repace my BOSE CD radio system.

I don’t own an Apple anything, no MP3 player to my name. I think the original iPod Shuffle looks sturdier and would more than meet my needs. Small is nice, but I still break a bluetooth earpiece about everyother month trying to put it on to use with my cell phone. I still own vinyl and a turn-table, along with cassettes & CD’s etc. I don’t really want to tune out the world with the ease a MP3 players presents. I like hearing the world…not just the world I choose, but the whole darn mess. I like real paper books and newspapers. I must be old. CA

I’m of the opinion that with iPod & iPhone being so popular, Apple can pretty much charge "all the traffic will bear".  I’m of the opinion that part of the iPod’s charge is just for the ‘prestige’ of the name.

I have an MP3 player & I’m very happy with my Zen by Creative Labs.  It’s a lot bigger, but it has an FM radio tuner, a voice recorder, & a screen big enough to watch videos on without strain on my aging eyes.\

The gadget that does tempt me is the pocket-sized video cam that Creative is offering on it’s site at a great price.

The new Ipod does nothing for me, I have a MP3 which does the job just fine.  Now what temps me is the Kindle, that’s on my wish list.  I could download my summer reading into one gadget and use it at the cottage, imagine!!

Just something can be lost very easily….just what you want to buy your teens who can’t even find their shoes at times.  This new ipod does not allow you to use your own ear phones, you have to buy an adapter if you want to not use the ones it comes with.

Libra, I have an Ipod Shuffle loaded with my favorite east coast beach music.   Wouldn’t dream of taking my walk along the Potomac or flying on an airplane without it!   It’s tiny.   Can’t imagine one being any smaller.

Interesting about the ear phones, I did not know that. Not that I’m planning on getting it anyway. I’m perfectly happy with my 8 gb Zune; and, if I do upgrade, it will be to a higher capacity Zune (I’m still envious of the 16gb Zune I got my brother as a highschool graduation present, LOL ;-) ).

I am like a lot of the ladies, I can’t listen to music and write, it distracts me. Sometimes I think that my daughter has acquired a new language.

Example : I have to go to such and such and buy a new MP3, he sat on his. Where is my blue tooth? Without my GSP I am totally lost.I am thinking should I "Kindle?", I ask you Mom should I "Kindle"? My blackberry is costing me so much already.

If it’s quiet, I’m with you. But, when there’s noise around me, I need music to form my own little "Rachel Zone" where the only noise is noise that I want, LOL. ;-)

iPod doesn’t impress me.  I have my own mp3 player and it does just fine.  I’d rather NOT keep up with the Jones.  I like being my own unique self in a crowd. :chuckles:   My mp3 player comes in handy when I walk, or when I get on the treadmill.  Otherwise, my wii fit keeps me amused when exercising, as does my mountain bike when I feel like taking a bike ride down the road.

I think iPods are just a waste of money personally.  Remember when the computers were born and how big the hard drives were, then the 5 1/2 " disk, to the 3 1/2" disk, to the flash drive to the…you get the idea.

Why in heaven’s name do I need an iPod? Nah, I’ll pass on that one.  To me that is just as needed as the 8 track player. :laughs:
