Cosmetic and most small repairs I tackle myself, structural I leave to those with more strength and crews. I have found some good handymen, and for installations I use home depot and thier people.
Although it takes a lot of time, I kind of like painting, and doing some creative things with the paintbrush. Somebody gave me what use to be a bathroom vanity that was large enough to ditch the top part, put on a flat surface and made a perfect addtiion to the porch to use for all the potting and planting tools in the spring and summer. Just needed to use my porch colors and repaint the bottom and the possiblities are endless.
I figured out how to do a lot of things for myself when I got divorced. What I couldn’t figure out for myself, I knew people who could give me pointers. I found out that I actually enjoyed doing stuff around the house for myself. I even made a lamp. I don’t mess with the cars, though. I have a sweetie now, who is multi-talented. His hobby is building race car motors, so I’m learning a little by osmosis :)
A lot of the minor stuff I can do myself: paint, change locks, strip woodwork, take apart & clean out a sink drain. Other stuff my kid brother or dad help me with, or take care of it themselves. Sometimes it’s easier to just step out of the way & let them swing in on their vines & deal with something, even if I can fix it myself.
For some stuff I call in pros; taking down a tree in the yard, furnace &A.C. maintenance, etc.
I do some things on my own and for the big things, I have the very capable and handy Mr.Tears. The only problem is that sometimes I need a lot of patience in waiting for the jobs to get done, as he works long days and often stops to help others before taking care of our stuff.
I have my own "handy man" who can take care of all small repairs, however, I am the first to call in a repairman for anything that needs a professional’s touch. I am a retired interior designer so I’m use to having an installer nearby. Although I can do most installations I choose not to get on the "ladder" these days. Besides, repairman need the work these days!!
Depends — there are some things I can do, and others that are too big for me. When I was younger (about 25 years ago), I bought a wreck of a house and did a lot of the repair work myself. Now it’s just too much for me.
Our son can do anything and usually will do it for us. But there are some things: plumbing, electricity that we really hire an expert for. Otherwise, i can sometimes figure it out.
Within weeks of moving into our house 35 years ago I discovered that my husbands forte was selling things, not fixing things, so right there the plan was set - either I do it or we hire somebody. Luckily, I had a mother who could do anything, from sewing my wedding dress to building a stone wall and I’ve become just like her. I do all the painting, wallpapering, small carpentry ( oooh, I love my cordless screwdriver ! ) installing light fixtures & ceiling fans, making curtains, cornices pillows, chair pads, bedspreads etc. …. however, I know my limits and will call a professional if the job becomes to big for me !
I have my own "handy man" on hand to do everything except the big jobs like furnace cleaning. This handy man is many faceted––he can fix anything, does windows, cleans stoves, cooks, bakes, gardens, has a lawn tractor that he sits on looking very darling in old clothes and a baseball cap while doing a spectacular job keeping our expansive lawn looking mighty fine. In the winter months he keeps our long driveway clear of snow. This man, on any given day, can also make me laugh and when the sun goes down and the moon comes up he makes my bed welcoming and warm. Who could ask for more?
I’ve always called someone else. I have absolutely no patience for it. I also don’t have the kind of mind that can look at things and see how they go together in a mechanical sense. or any kind of construction sense. I have to have instructions that say do a then be then c for any kind of repair. so most of the time i call somebody. or my husband of course. who can do most things but also has no patience.
If it is something that either Hubby or myself can do, we do it. I don’t mess with electricity but hubby does, we just installed beautiful European fans throughout the house and hubby is the gifted one there. I grew up helping my dad build our family home (Beautiful Tri-Level in the California Hills) so have learned alot about building and remodeling and have carried that knowledge with me to remodel three of the homes I’ve owned and sold. I actually throughly enjoy these types of projects as the results are relatively, for the most part, quick allowing for the "Instant" gratification (If you will) of seeing the end project. I’m a designer in heart so I love putting ideas into concepts that work and wow at the same time.

I always hire the best…. after all, I want others to hire me for my talents, don’t I?

I have learned not to mess with plumbing or electricity. Just about anything else, I’ll give it a try.
Drat! Still with the pie chart.
