Brainstorm Your Own Health-Care Reform Plan

By YOU!
© Shutterstock

For those of you who aren’t in the Hamptons or Malibu, we’re inviting you to come to wOw this Labor Day weekend to craft your own health-care reform plan. From reading your comments during these past months in wOw reports and throughout the website, it seems that we all agree that an efficient and effective health-care system is very important. This is a long weekend, and usually, for us, the best ideas flow over a cup of coffee or glass of wine with friends. So talk to them and your family about the best solution for health care.

Share with us the ideas you discussed.

If you want to learn more about the universal health-care initiative, visit healthreform.gov. Also, here are some questions to help start the conversation: How would your plan be funded? What would you call it? Who would be covered? How much would it cost for people?

Rainbow I agree it is quite funny people expect the president to have solved everything only a few months after the start of his presidency has begun. I wish people would give him a chance. He was handed our country in its worst shape since the great depression. Your post was well thought out:)

"Handed the country"? The way I see it, he volunteered for this!

Amongst all of the hope and change rhetoric…I seem to remember him stating that change would be quick and that a healthcare plan would be in place by the end of his first year.  While I believe this is impossible to do CORRECTLY if it is rushed through….and that other programs take time to be effective, Obama did open himself up for this type of criticism.

Rainbow, a good post!  When Social Security became a reality, it was almost a year before the first checks went out.  This reform will not happen over night.  But we have to start somewhere because the current path we are on is in a rapidly descending spiral that we cannot sustain.  Let’s  get our foot in the door and then see how it unfolds.  I am so hoping this President can put that into play.

Most thinking people don’t really expect this president to accomplish ANYTHING. If you want to know what’s REALLY going on in this world of “politics,” take a look at a totally non-partisan video. It’s almost two hours, but well worth the time.

It tells the truth about Bush AND Obama.

FYI, the video I posted critizes Bush every bit as much as BHO.

Hey—I take a backseat to no one in my contempt for Bush. The problem is, my contempt for Obame grows by the say. I feel like Babes in Toyland believing any of these people.

What kinds of friends desert you because you are loyal to insurance companies? That’s a shame. You have certainly made some good points, but we need to keep in mind that not all insurance companies operate as well or as honestly as what you describe. When health insurance is given to make a profit then it becomes profit centered and not patient centered. These companies need to revamp, and according to most of the bills pending there will be new regulations, but it doesn’t mean they will be followed. They will still have to make a profit because they have stock holders; this is an important distinction. The public option is just that––an option. How it is to be incorporated is what a lot of the controversy is about. Many, like Star, would like to see Medicare be expanded in the way she describes, instead of a completely new program. I don’t know whether we could do that, but as many ideas as there are, there are legislators trying to put it together or not.

I was not suggesting Medicare be expanded, but instead was saying somehow the supplementals to Medicare had been required to be standardized…each co’s Plan A containing the same benefits as every other company’s plan A. I was saying, why couldn’t the existing insurance companies do this for everyone—so we could compare on price and choose the set of benefits right for us.

Phyllis, while I’m not a huge insurance company fan, the harsh reality is that ANY business must make some sort of profit in order to stay in business.  I agree that when shareholders are involved, that profit margin is sometimes pushed to be bigger, but whose to say that the money invested by those shareholders did not go to benefit patients?  If you invest in any type of company, do you not wish for a return on your investment?  Unfortunately, there is a fine line between greed and a reasonable profit invested properly to assure funding in the event of a disaster.  There are good insurance companies and unethical ones, just like any business.  This is quite unfortunate, since we are addressing healthcare.  I believe the best way to BEGIN to reform our healthcare, is to allow purchase of healthcare insurance across state lines.  This would foster some fierce competition and start to bring prices down.  We also need to address the fraud and abuse involved in Medicare billing.  Medicaid can be expanded to include those that are NOT ELIGIBLE for emplyee provided insurance, this would catch those who work in places that aren’t required to provide health benefits as well as those who have lost their jobs.  This could be provided on a sliding scale according to income, if any.  In order to pay for this, a 1 or 2% national sales tax could be implemented.  This money should be restricted to healthcare ONLY, with clauses strong enough to prevent fund diversion as happened with SS/Medicare.  This would make everyone responsible for funding it. Much like a performance improvement model, a year later these changes need to be reviewed for effectiveness and need for further programs.  Adjustments need to be made for what isn’t working well at this point.

Your analysis is correct.  Do not worry about undocumented workers or their families.  Just worry about the general population of the U.S.A.. I appreciate your opinion and your clear thinking.  But there must be a solution.  Wish I were smart enough to figure it out.No one should be vilified for having an opinion. Do not worry about the smug vilifiers.  Be your own person.  Just read and ignore…
