Billy Norwich’s Academy Awards Best Dressed: Anne, Meryl, Kate, Angelina, Penelope

Photo Essay

There were two directions in the fashion sweepstakes at the Oscars last night, actresses like Natalie Portman and Amy Adams who wore bold color, and actresses who went the more monochromatic route of blacks, grays, whites, and beiges including Best Actress winner Kate Winslet, Marissa Tomei, and Penelope Cruz. In either case, it was one of the best-dressed Oscar years in memory and, appropriate for these challenged financial times, elegance, not bling, ruled: hair was neat, not nutty, makeup fresh, romantic and not dramatic, the one-shouldered dress was a major fashion statement, including Freida Pinto’s John Galliano blue gown, and jewelry was big but simple — Angelina Jolie’s emerald earrings could feed an African nation. Best dressed (not in any order)

Merly Streep, Taraji P. Henson, Marisa Tormei(I would be remiss, if I did not comment on this 40 year olds body. Saw her in the Wrestler, where she plays a stripper. She spent a great deal of this film in a thong and pasties and she wasn’t posed-best body going) , Angelina Jolie, Penelope Cruz, Natalie Portman, Kate Winslett, Viola Davis, Diane Lane, Frieda Pinto and Tilda Swinton.

Worst Dressed (not in any order)

Sarah Jessica Parker, (her too long hair  parted in the middle/did make her look like the wicked witch of the North…Would someone get this woman to do something else with her hair and some reminded her at some point age tells us we can no longer wear anything and still look great.)

Amy Adam’s red dress and necklace with her red hair made her one blob, I would have loved more contrast with her beautiful hair.

Anne Hathaway’s dark hair and eyes and very pale skin needs to find some color that enhances those attributes. Beautiful dress, but didn’t work for me on her.

Heidi Klum, I love you, but not the dress nor the hair.

The gowns were beautiful.  Every one a winner.  Designs and colors gorgeous in their simplicity.  If challenged financial times caused this remarkable improvement from the expected norm for such star studded events, then we should rejoice in the result.  Perhaps the existing international financial shortfall may cause a domino effect towards improvement in other areas where unbridled and blind spending and over-lavish expenditures have usually proceeded unchecked.

Meryl Streep looked great. She looks like a woman her age… but in the best possible way! Relaxed, healthy, vibrant, lovely, not trying to look 25 and more importantly, not NEEDING to.

And you’re right about Sophie Loren looking like a lampshade next to Meryl Streep. But then… when on her own Ms Loren looked like old time Hollywood, and isn’t that one of the reasons people watch?

Actually, I thought Nicole Kidman was the sweetest thing I saw all evening.  And I liked it a lot better than Ann Hathaway’s.  Tell me what I don’t know

Great slideshow - nothing horrifying - must have been a very good fashion year at the Oscars! My favorite color was the rich red of Amy’s gown - quite elegant.

Sophia Loren is a great and classic beauty.  I was thrilled to see her and thought she looked fantastic - even with all the ruffles.

Meryl Streep - best dressed

Alicia Keys - stunner of the night

Anne Hathaway - most beautiful dress

Mickey Rourke - biggest heart on their sleeve

There was an overabundance of white dresses - many which were a bit bridal fashionesque.

Note to Sean Penn - it takes more time and energy to explain away why you omitted your spouse from your speech than to toss them a generous note of gratitude.  Also, it was touching to see that your hands were trembling during your acceptance speech.  You’re flesh and blood afterall - wow!

Frieda Pinto’s dress-the color, the design, beautiful!  Not to say that there were others that were not as beautiful, but Frieda’s was my favorite, on her.  There was only a few that I could have worn, so there’s no envy on my part.  I would have liked to have seen the ring, Frieda was wearing.  It was said to have been over 125 years old and from India?

Did you notice the green jewels Angelie Jolie was wearing?  Were they emeralds or fakes?  I’ve never seen emeralds of that cut and size.  Looked more like some of my young grand daughters "spark-lies" that they love wearing.

Yes, I loved those EMERALDS!  Beautiful.  And Angelie Jolie looked wonderful wearing them in her understated gown.  I thought she looked the best.

So many have said that Meryl Streep was best dressed.  Really?  She does wear those off-the-shoulder evening gowns and I really do not think they are the best style for her.  However, the dress was lovely.  All the tuxes looked good.

Best acceptance speech was by Kate Winslet.  Sean Penn’s speech was not surprising but I did enjoy his line "I know how difficult I make it for people to like me".

I loved Meryl Streep’s comment on the red carpet when asked if she and her daughter had difficulty choosing dresses together for the evening.  The daughter said yes and Ms. Streep said, ‘No, this one fit.’

Peace and grace

What’s with Goldie Hawn and her boobs hanging out of the strapless gown and that overly long hair. Maybe she shouldn’t try to still be a sex pot at her age. She’s still very attractive, but cover up a bit, and leave that for the younger ones who are sexpots.

Lizzie, I couldn’t agree more, she is still very attractive, but she really needs to tone it down a notch or two .  My husband thought she looked like a train wreck, and he is a huge Goldie fan.

Sophia, the glam goddess, my goodness she is still such a stunning woman!

Was Whoopi Goldberg left out of the fashion chatter because she looked so  ridiculous?……Like she was dressed by Hollywood Tent & Awning….Never mind the over-done leopard print, I think she was trying to make an African statement but she could have done it a little more….no, alot more….tastefully. Natalie Portman captured the fashion trophy of the night, exquisite, flawless, like a vision of feminine beauty.  I love Marissa Tomei but that dress was a mess…Versace must  be rolling over in his grave.  Shirley McClaine and Sophia Loren were both disappointing, Shirley looked like Jack the Ripper and Sophia looked like a wilted lilly,  with hair to match.  When I first saw Sarah Jessica Parker I thought it was Ruth Buzzi.  Hiedi Klum’s designer appears to have gone a little nuts with the scissors.  Over all, too many wedding gowns but alot of beautiful women and a truly spectacular night, the best Awards Show ever.

No!  Whoopi was not trying to make an AFRICAN statement.  She was going for comfort.  Just because a Black person wears an animal print outfit does not mean they are trying to make an AFRICAN statement.  When you make a statement like that does that make you Racist?  Think about it!!
