Billy Norwich’s Academy Awards Worst Dressed: Sophia, Goldie, Reese, Jessica

Bows, pleated tiers and ruffles? Why?

Photo Essay

There’s a photograph they should show at Hollywood press agent and stylist seminars. Meryl Streep, in a chic, simple, unfussy smokey gray chiffon Alberta Ferretti gown is sophisticated, elegant, sublime. Compared to her, Sophia Loren, a fabulous looking woman now filming the musical “Nine” in Europe, looks like a gaudy lampshade in her organza Armani Prive dress. Pleated tiers and ruffles? Why?

The Jessica Biel dressed looked as if the designer or dressmaker had not finished with it!   I also agree with the remarks regarding the other two but the Biel gown was the worst.

Sorry Billy - and some of the other so-called fashionistas - Sophia Loren looked great.  Meryl Streep on the other hand looked tired and frumpy and Shirley Maclaine looked like she wanted to fade into the woodwork.  Don’t get me wrong,  I love both of these ladies, but I always feel that they are "dressing their age"  and just what the hell does that mean?  Sophia Loren looked proud to be a glamorous lady of a certain age.  Just look at her standing with her hand on her hip.  Just wonderful!  Her dress made her look over the top and bright and still sexy.  I don’t know if I will ever go to an awards show like the Oscars but I can assure you, critics be damned, I want to look like La Loren.

Give it up Billy, for Sophia! You have been too long on the job!

Sophia doesn’t belong to the world of american matrons. That dress was beautiful! Call her an old lamp if you want, but she was young looking and shining!

Until people travel and experience styles in different nations, they simply cannot understand culture.

This topic is fraught with problems, period. This was an award event but is never produced as such - that is not viewers faults, nor most of those used on the stage. Were it truly an award event, and treated as such, all the extras trapsing about would not be needed, nor be criticized, I guess. But, why would we bother to criitize others dress in such times as we are in right now? It addresses the core of our greatest national problem, indeed.

Enjoy life within oneself, first. Let others live and dress, at least, if they have attained any status in life, or their own goals, dress is not their primary concern, nor should it be.

Those of live to comment and critize must be truly desperate, indeed internally distraught individuals. Try going for a daily swim, and sip tea twice a day.

I can’t believe I’m going to agree with the so-called fashion experts, but Sophia’s gown was a nightmare!  The woman is just stunning - for any age!  All those puffy ruffles just detracted from her classic elegance.  A simpler gown - where she and her fabulous looks were the focus - would have been so much better.  And Shirley MacLaine - while I’ve always loved her and her independent spirit - could have stepped it up just a bit.  I thought Eva Marie Saint looked wonderful - and Meryl Streep - can you get more classic than that?  I think that was one of my favorite parts of the show - all those wonderful stars - from the days when the word really meant something - quite a moment.

I love Goldie Hawn but her breasts ended before her gown began.  Seriously, look at the photo.  It’s a laugh-in.

I love Sophia, no doubt about it, she usually looks stunning, this dress for me looked like something she wore 30 years ago, same for the necklace.

Meryl looked fabulous but she is not in her 70’s either.

Call me nuts but the more I stared at that picture of Sophia Loren in that totally frilly dress, I could not help but be taken back way beyond my birthdate to an era when all that "fuss" was what made Hollywood movies so memorable! Remember those flicks when the women wore mink stoles simply walking around their houses? Yes it was very very weird, but oh so glamourous at the same time, plus it made those women stand out like royalty. Remember, Sophia is from those golden days, and at 74 years old she still shines like the goddess she was and always will be. You keep wearing that smile Sophia and never ever change!
