The Down Index: Purported Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff might be bad for investors, but the folks in Jackson Hole, WY, are not happy either — especially about his choice in hats.

As the year wraps up, here’s one sartorial — and we use the word advisedly — mystery solved. The logo on Bernie Madoff’s cap? You can’t miss it. Been wondering about it for days. It is the photo in heavy rotation, the sociopath financier hiding under his cap and trying to disappear inside his fashion-y hunting jacket.

“Just saw the hat,” a stockbroker pal e-mails us. “It is a Jackson Hole, WY, logo hat! The bucking bronco!”

Filled with Recessionista skiers on their holiday break, the folks in Jackson Hole aren’t pleased by the subliminal advertising Madoff is giving them with his cap.

Madoff is not a regular in the resort, or a homeowner. There is “no known relationship” between Madoff and Jackson Hole, says the resort’s spokeswoman, Anna Olson.

So, to help restore Jackson Hole’s pristine reputation, here are some baseball caps we think the town fathers there would like to see him wear.

Been to Jackson Hole many times for sking. It is really nice, however, a logo on a hat worn by Bernie Madoff shouldn’t become an agenda as to whether one visits this darling place, consider it free advertizing.

People are killing themselves, charities and lives are decimated and the two of you are worrying about baseball caps. There is an ongoing insensitivity and lack of wit to your snarky attempts at satire and commentary. Yuck!!!!!!

As one who got bilked by Bernie, I have to admit that I checked to see whether his baseball cap was a Mets cap - after all, he swindled his good buddy, Fred Wilpon, the owner of the Mets (who lost a great deal more than I did), among many others. By the way, if you are wondering why I am not shooting myself (literally or metaphorically) because of the money that I lost, I should remind you that the secret to saving money (in all senses of the word) is DIVERSIFICATION. I didn’t have all my eggs in Bernie’s basket nor did I, in fact, ask to put eggs there. Someone offered me the opportunity more than ten years ago so I put a few eggs there. My most recent statement from the less than divine Mr. M. indicated that I had amassed a big omelet, but my big omelet seems just to have been, if you will pardon the mixed metaphor, pie in the sky.

I don’t blame them for being offended by the fact he is sporting a cap with their logo. Who would want to admit to him being a regular at their facility? He is so disgusting.
