They say 40 is the new 30, 50 the new 40 and so on. Sure, we may feel that way – and often behave that way – but we may need a little help looking that way. Don’t fear, wOw Friend and Beauty Guru Shirley Lord is here to save the day! From thicker eyelashes to thicker hair, pinker lips to – yes! – pinker nipples, here are ten ways to take off ten years. And guess what? She’s also taken the economic climate into account. Not one of these tips require a scalpel, sedative or scads of cash.

Editor’s Note: Shirley Lord has had a front-row view of the beauty business for years. Born in London, she was working on Fleet Street at the age of 18. In the early ’70s she moved to the United States and became beauty editor of Harper’s Bazaar. In 1980 she left for American Vogue, where she has had a long and distinguished career. She is the author of five novels, two “Bibles” on health and beauty and an autobiography.

Most of the tips good, I rather use weights and exercise…no shapewear for me, am proud of my shape and intend to keep it. BTW Crest Whitening Strips really work and are easy. Pink looks good on those who have more blue undertones, but since I have blond hair and peachy skin…pink looks ‘off’ on me…light peach/soft bronze is my palette.

For anyone wanting guidance in lipstick color selection, I love Bobbi Brown’s Lip System color wheel. You can pick one up for free at any dept. store that carries the line. You match the wheel to your lips’ natural naked shade. The wheel offers you four neutrals, four brights, and four deep shades that are just right for you. You can purchase your products from Bobbi Brown, or take the Lip System color wheel to your local Target if you want.

NP fantastic tip…I wrote it down in notebook for next makeup purchase. Have actually been letting products run out to start a new line…and like the Bobbie Brown look, neutrals with a smoky eye, actually saw her do a makeover on TV and was surprised just how strong the eye was. I always run to the window and look in magnifying mirror in direct sun as concerned to overdo. BTW speaking of beautiful….I found these great quotes today on a facebook friend’s page…loved them: “I cannot pretend to be impartial about the colours. I rejoice with the brilliant ones, and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns.” - Winston Churchill “The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.” Frank Lloyd Wright “A joke is a very serious thing.” Winston Churchill “An artist is someone who produces things that people don’t need to have but that he - for some reason - thinks it would be a good idea to give them.” Andy Warhol “Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.” Andy Warhol “I’ve decided something: Commercial things really do stink. As soon as it becomes commercial for a mass market it really stinks.” Andy Warhol “A doctor can bury his mistakes but an architect can only advise his clients to plant vines.” Frank Lloyd Wright “A great architect is not made by way of a brain nearly so much as he is made by way of a cultivated, enriched heart.” Frank Lloyd Wright “An architect’s most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board, and a wrecking bar at the site.” Frank Lloyd Wright “Every great architect is - necessarily - a great poet. He must be a great original interpreter of his time, his day, his age.” Frank Lloyd Wright “Drop it like it’s hot.” Snoop Dogg “I’d rather deal with Tipper than Bush. He’s trying to kill everybody in jail.” Dr. Dre “Probably my worst quality is that I get very passionate about what I think is right.” Hillary Clinton “You show people what you’re willing to fight for when you fight your friends.” Hillary Clinton “Art resides in the quality of doing, process is not magic.” Charles Eames “Choose your corner, pick away at it carefully, intensely and to the best of your ability and that way you might change the world.” Charles Eames “Ideas are cheap. Always be passionate about ideas and communicating those ideas and discoveries to others in the things you make.” Charles Eames “All I want are high heels, high heels. If I was a girl, I’d wear a lot of high heels. High, stiletto heels.” Isaac Mizrahi “Less is more.” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe “God is in the details.” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe “I don’t want to be interesting. I want to be good.” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Carmel, Thank you for the quotes! Love them. I’m going to read them over again after I finish work. Want to give them more time. I’m imagining you going to the window with your magnifying glass! Funny. But really, every woman should check before going out. Let me know what you think, if you check out the BB wheel. I booked myself an appt. at South Coast Plaza for Feb. something. They are having a BB event. Her makeup “team” will be there. Free consultation, etc. I love to go once a year. Make sure concealer colors are still the best, etc. And it’s so fun. My cheap thrill.

Carmel, great quotes, just have to disagree with 2 of them. Have discovered at barely 5 foot that when I put on high, high heels I look like a clown on stilts. (But being that size I do believe that “Less is More”) & I want to be good and interesting!! LOL

Sandbee….{a friend’s qoutes, I didn’t edit} I used to wear high heels when worked….but now can’t imagine how anything could get me in them. My fave is something like the black quilted Chanel ballet flats….classic, feminine and comfortable.

Carmel - used to be married to someone over a foot & a half taller than me - I wore heels and the works - gave up both the husband and the shoes - too much effort. It’s flats for me too, love the styles they have out nowadays.

As to the topic… OMG makeup is the demon! i just can’t figure that stuff out. so i’ve given up. i occassionally wear mascara and burts bees colored lip stuff. but beyond that i am beyond helpless. a couple times i’ve stopped at those department store counters for those makeup things. i think i always look ten years older and desperate when they are done with me.

Chrome: the secret is a lot of make-up applied very little skillfully––in other words, you can use foundation, blush, mascara, eye shadow, a puff of powder, lip gloss/or lipstick and you are good to go and if applied sparingly it will enhance instead of shout of a made up face.

CT, I was with you until I hit 40 and an Orlane rep from France showed me what the problem was. After that, Orlane was all I used, with an auto re-order from N-M, which his saying a lot for me! The culprit was my skin - flawless but sensitive oily, (sensitive to anything with laurel-anything in it) and I had been trying everything from cosmetics to cleansing stuff for “dry skin” - as a born red-head. I have to say their line, then, suited me. Now, with fading “red” but still freckled, any changes in my coloring exogenously affects my overall look, and my clothing. I’ve given up and stick with olive oil, alpha hydroxils (still!), an almost vegan diet, and Dove Sensitive, and all Cetaphil products. *smiling*
