Best Dressed List December 16: Balenciaga, Broadway and ... the Bosom
If, to paraphrase the British fashion historian James Laver, what we wear is the furniture of the mind made visible, it is interesting to note that this past week the Best-Dressed in our observation wore outfits that drew attention to the bosom — whether it was a revealing low-cut look or something glittering or ornamental covering the chest. What’s up? Well, try this psycho-fashion theory on: While the world that men have wrought topples at breakneck speed — the collapse of our financial systems we mean — the gods are crumbling. So the goddess rises, a woman with maturity and, fashion-wise, that means the pocket Venus, the maternal savior, Mother Earth meets Armani, chic and ready and able to guide lost children home. No more supplicating little-girl looks of the bling years, but going goddess takes a bit of practice. Here is Cate Blanchett covering herself while worshipping over her own star recently revealed on The Hollywood Walk of Fame, lest the paparazzi get rich with a cheap shot.
