wowOwow's Best-Dressed List: The Black, White, Yin and Yang

Photo Essay

Followers of our Best-Dressed List are getting used to the news this fall that the No. 1 trend for the fashionable set is clothing that is basic black and sometimes with white — black and white for a little yin with the yang (or vice versa). When it is new clothes, black is recessionary proof, unlikely to go out of season in six months. When it is a matter of wearing something “vintage,” also known as “your clothes,” black is unlikely to be as easily remembered as, well, shocking pink; few if any will remember you wore that dress before. But probably there are other attractions to wearing black and white in these unsettled times. It expresses a longing for absolutes, some basic truths — black and white matters — to adhere to when everything else seems to be spinning out of control like a circus in purgatory.

Black or brown looks phenomenal on brunettes with brown eyes - for me, anyway. If a blonde has blue eyes, then she usually looks great in blue.

Okay, James. What about light brown hair with a little natural frost and green eyes. Then what?

Green or brown attire, my dear.

Good answer. I never feel more heads turn than when I’m in chocolate brown or deep hunter green. Black doesn’t really do much for me. In fact, I usually throw it on when I don’t really care what I look like.

My girl, Jude, had dark brown hair, and black looked sensational on her. It looks great on Campbell Brown and Marlo Thomas, too. A lighter brown probably sounds right for you, but I’d have to see it, to pontificate further. Ha!

I love Judi Dench! It’s great to see her looking so good.

Black and white are so refreshing! The absence of colour is what black is actually. And the blending of all colour is the scientific definition of white. Every possible colour combination has had its mark in the fashion world. But black and white will always be there. They are the ultimate fashion statement because they are timeless ideas.

I often wear just black pants and a white shirt. I like the clean, distinct feel of it. I have blue eyes, so I should wear more blue than I do.

Black and White in the tradition of Channel, i.e. suit or ciggarette pants with the crisp white man style shirt collar up and black European pumps with a kitten heel. Otherwise straight up Black!

Ahhh…Raquel looks fabulous! And, she isn’t bird-thin, and looks so healthy and natural.
