wowOwow's Best Dressed: Just in Time for Fall ... the Jacket

Photo Essay

It is not only that a jacket covers a multitude of, well, a multitude, but in a woman’s wardrobe the jacket does a lot. It is the dynamic unity for any look, either business or pleasure, great with trousers or skirts and when sitting down to dine have great table appeal (what you see from the waist up).

Louise Grunwald’s look is my favorite…is that gray suede? But the long jacket at the American Airlines theater is the kind of thing I like to think I can “pull off” with the right shoes.

Liz Smith and Lee Radzwill are my favorites.

Love the Lee Radziwill look. Whenever I go to a “business casual” meeting, the men are in shirt sleeves, even golf shirts. The women are without fail always in some kind of a jacket. A woman wouldn’t get any respect if she didn’t have that jacket.

Love Yoko’s look. Stunning. Altho a little young for her. Not so much Raziwell. Looks like she’s trying too hard. (On the other hand, perhaps it is just the angle of the shot. Great jacket. But everyone is trying too hard to look too young.) I don’t know, maybe I am more of a classic style gal. I think mature women show more gravitas with a classic look and appear sort of sad when trying to hold onto youth. Elizabeth Peyton? Is that a “best dressed look?” I am seriously out of touch! I also thot that Issey Miyake piece was downright lizard-like. Liz Smith in black leather tho? You go girl.

These are extremely conservative outfits. I don’t really see fashion here. Just wearable dutiful American status quo outfits. I like Liz’s black leather outfit, and I liked Lee’s outfit, but she way overdid both her hair and makeup. I prefer the selection of photos with Prada/Donatella/Wintour/Ines etc. Notice none of them are wearing “the jacket” which tells me that it is definitely NOT a fashion statement again—- There may be a glimmer of hope for a return to the jacket as a fashion item though—because the editor of French Vogue and her daughter are both wearing jackets…! Ah Ha! How’s that for a little investigative fashionista research in a nutshell!

This girl’s favorite bolt hole: perusing photos of fabulous fashions - give me pictures of clothes, bags, shoes, well-kempt women. A great escape for the imagination while the world roils around us. Sports? Too competitive. Too violent. Episodic TV? Too predictable. Too ugly? News? Hmmm, since feeling trivialized as a liberal American woman by Governor Palin’s elevation to the national scene and feeling queasy at developments of the economic meltdown …. Thanks, WOWOWOW, for adding “jackets” to my day. After the NYT’s Sunday crossword was done, I was just going to needlepoint!
