Best Dressed List January 26: J'Adore Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week

Photo Essay

Black clothes were on the march in Paris during the presentation of the City of Light’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2009. Despite strikes last week protesting the government’s handling of the current financial malaise, the fashion shows were exempted from interruption. In France, the fashion shows must go on! It is a matter of national pride, n’est-ce pas? But what to wear if you are a lady going to a fashion show in the worst economy in decades? Well, black, of course. It is respectful, restrained, elegant, formal and dramatic, and on this week’s “10 Best Dressed” it is also hardly basic, never bland, never mournful, but worn with perfection and high style whether it is a new shoe parading on the Christian Dior runway or a black frock sashayed by Inès de la Fressange for Jean Paul Gaultier.

Ummm, does this mean “Black is the new ‘I am not flaunting the fact I can still spend obscene amounts of money on clothes?’” Or has everyone just gained weight from age and stress and is trying to minimize the width of their hips? We all have too much black in our wardrobes already for funerals, slimming and wearing in Paris and NYC (trying not to look like tourists). I think I need a jar of that cream containing donkey testicles so I can afford to drink before noon - I’m going to watch Mama Mia again!

My 16 year old daughter keeps a running tally of how many pairs of black footwear I own - around 10, I think, from flipflops to pumps to boots. Black accessories remain constant, classic and totally reliable.

Ines de la Fressange is just lovely, and that is the first I’ve heard of Marianne Faithful in years. I like black, but get very tired of it. This winter I’m wearing more browns and taupes. I looked at the Valentino spring ‘09 because, as you know, he retired this past season, and I hope the new designers can keep his beautiful style. So far they have succeeded.

The beige shoes with the black evening gown? Did anyone else find this a bit off-putting? Most of the outfits are simply stunning.
