Ellen Barkin looks so sad; hip, stylish, beautiful but sad. She has one of the happiest smiles — one that makes you want to smile right back. Hope she’s happy and the camera just caught her pondering the cost of gasoline or something.

If I might be so bold, I think she looks sad because that hair style drags the face down. I just love the style, and wish to goddess I could wear it, but when gravity takes its toll, the last thing we need is hair that is drooping along already drooping jowls. I am also a retired stylist, and did started doing hair back in the 70s, when it was an unspoken rule that the older you got, the shorted your hair was supposed to be. I flaunted this by wearing a pixie much like Jamie’s most of my life. When I hit 40, I let it grow long, and it did make me look younger then. Now at 56, on Thursday, I think a classic bob is a good style for me. The only drawback is the when I had my last child, 17 years ago, my stick straight hair developed an unruly wave. Now I have to use a flat iron to get it to lay right. I would go back to the pixie in a minute, but I think a bit of coverage around the fluffy face looks better. Plus I like to have a little swing in my hair when I toss my head, doncha know.

How wrong you are! The only haricuts you have here that help to keep you looking younger are Jaime’s, Sharon’s, Jane’s and Christine’s. Everyone else looks their age or older! Most look terrible; they’re trying to look younger but it ain’t working! Sharon looks waaay better with her hair short. Ellen looks horrible every way she tries (sorry), Susan just looks like a mom her age, and everyone else just looks old. It’s really hard to find a hairstyle that helps you look young, I’m having a hell of a time, too! Short is best on me but I’m single and men like long hair! I’ll keep trying and you keep trying!

I was thinking exactly the same thing, Robin. Aside from the ones you mentioned, everyone else looks like an average suburban mom or grandmom to me, not glamorous stars. I mentioned in a previous post, hiding or drawing attention away from one’s neck seems to be necessary after a certain age for most of us. Norah Ephron would agree!

Where is the hair styles for blacks? not all of us look good in cornrolls.

Seems to me Krys, if it feels good to you - that’s what you should wear.

I’m with Dona and Sandbee, be comfortable where you are. Botox looks so unnatural its scary! Who doesn’t notice a confident women with a great smile? I keep my red hair because my husband complements me when it looks good and when I laugh no one notices the wrinkles and the extra curves.

I am blest with naturally curly hair—-I didn’t always think so! When I was real thin I used to wear it like Jamie Lee Curtis. Now I am 50 and fluffy-haha—my curls have loosened up a little bit and I wear it chin length so I can just let it be natural—I don’t fight it anymore—-its one of the parts of me I am most proud of…….

Wear your hair anyway you want….. were it up, down, brown, beige, yellow, red or blonde. Were it long, wear it short, wear it in a ponytail…… it should reflect the way you feel about yourself. Age does not limit what you can do with your hair, unless you let style gurus tell you it does.

I recently cut my long hair to an inverted chin-length bob and loved it. But then I worried - does cutting my hair mean I’m giving up on being youthful and sexy? No way! For more about feeling sexy no matter how old you are, check out my blog: http://fortyfabulous.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
