Wow… they all look amazing. I espeically like Mary’s bare arms! I think they look sexy and daring. I don’t particularly love Oprah’s dress but not because of the color or her weight. I just don’t love the but. I’ve seen her more flattering styles. Sally’s dress is gorgeous I like the cap sleeves and it looks great on her. Glen’s dress is just to “black”. with the shawl or whatever it is covering her arms and the floor length it’s just a bit daunting. but she looks amazing none the less.

I, for one, love Oprah’s dress and thought it looked great on her- she looks dynamite in red, and am slightly (okay, more than slightly, since it actually made me de-lurk lol) offended at the caption implying that she is too “big” to wear that color. I didn’t realize plus-size women should make every effort to hide visually in something like black, or maybe an invisibility cloak, lest they offend the masses with their excessive weight. :-/

Here is the real deal: Glen, beautiful, update the hair and loose the shawl. Mary, actually she looks good. She has always been skinny and she flaunts it! Sally, loose the cap sleeves. You are gorgeous so let it shine. Oprah, I guess she can wear whatever she wants but I would have gone black or lost the tails. She chose right for her body shape however. The good news is that they all look fantastic and no one is under the age of 50. Rock on!

I think black is too funereal and made them look like merry widows.

Boy, I read the comments before looking at the pictures. Mary Tyler Moore’s arms look great. Very toned. Good for her…you only get that from working out. Oprah is just a big lady. She looked well dressed and comfortable with herself. Very confident. Sally Fields’ dress was perhaps more attractive in person. In the picture it seemed to overwhelm her petite structure. And Glenn Close reminded me of Barbara Stanwyck. Very regal. The old-style movie star look. Much more attractive than the recent trend of low cut with fake boobs squished over the top, tight-tight skirt that many younger actresses wear.

Of the four, I think Sally Field looked the best. Oprah looked garish, I agree with the others that Mary Tyler Moore is WAY too thin, and Glenn Close looked dressed for Halloween.

I agree with you, Molly, especially about Mary Tyler Moore. But no one has yet mentioned the very beautiful Christina Applegate! She reminded me of Grace Kelly….sleek, classic good looks. She looked absolutely perfect. She is gorgeous.

You are right Barb, Christine looked divine. Especially for someone fighting breast cancer. I don’t like the red of Oprahs dress, the shape however is great. And her face is so beautiful. They did a close up and I thought how wonderful she looks. Glen Close and the others looked great as well. Candice, who was dressed in a pant-suit, looked really great too. That was a nice difference to the fashion madness of dresses. I think it has to be difficult to find the right style for such an occassion and that all women made a marvellous choice.

This thread weaves a very interesting commentary on our current ideals of glamour, beauty, taste. It’s so funny that we all long for the day when we can be who we are, and then pick at women who’ve made it there. Beauty over 40 has very little to do with weather we expose our flaws or hide them. It’s got a lot more to do with that deep confidence that comes with self-acceptance and that vibrant embrace of the years gone by that all these women seemed to exhibit…with the possible exception of Marcia Cross. .

I have strongly disliked Oprah’s hair since she started wearing it long and big. Looks like the big blonde look we used to have in Dallas that FINALLY was laid to rest about 10 years ago. This is not about her, It’s about her hairdresser. I also don’t think she is getting the correct hypothyroid treatment but then it takes a long time for some of us to get the correct information. The endocrinologists don’t always know it. I’m going to go to her website and see what she says she is doing. She shouldn’t have more trouble with her weight if she is getting the correct treatment. She might not get skinny either. I suspect she is on the wrong medication. Hypothyroid and an RN.

All the ladies looked lovely. These award shows are getting to be such a boring thing we have to depend on the women dressing very glamorous so there is something of interest to see. I can’t even make it all the way through the Oscars any more.
