Graduate Your 'High-School Hair' (Photos)

Think your long locks make you look sexy? Think again!

Think your long locks make you look sexy? Think again!

“High-school hair” — the long, one-length locks once worn as a teen — doesn’t always flatter the over-40-year-old woman. Long hair can pull the face down — accentuating wrinkled or sagged skin. When hair has movement and style, imperfections on the skin are forgiven.

Do you have “high-school hair”? You’re not alone. Even the most beautiful women in the world walk around with hair fit for a cheerleader. And, to prove our point, we rounded up five gorgeous celebrities whose “high-school hair” wasn’t doing their skin any favors.

Hoping to get a professional opinion on the matter, we asked Manhattan’s chicest, private stylist, Paul Podlucky, to pinpoint where each woman went wrong, why this style is unbecoming and ways for them to improve.

Paul explains how long hair can look amazing on a mature face — if cut intelligently. “Age does not mean you have to have a ‘soccer mom’ bob. Style and taste varies. There are some guidelines but rules are not set in stone. Structural integrity and volume are necessary to bring the eye up.”

I have a hairstyle and color treatment that is so dramatic, people are stunned when they see me. I took a huge risk and am second guessing my choice. I was trying to be “hip” and young, but I think I may be coming across as a clown. I’m usually very conservative and simple in terms of my appearance. I really stepped outside the box with my new look. Scary!

Gee, I just cut my long hair a few weeks ago. Also, I’ve gone white… after I saw the pictures of women who looked so good in their white styles, especially Meryl Streep. Well, I’m not comparing myself to Meryl Streep.. just the color, or lack of it.

Donatella Versace looks hideous. What in the world would make her, with all her money, do that to her face and wear her hair the way she does. I am 51, she is 53, I’ve had no cosmetic surgery, don’t think a whole hell of a lot about trying to look “glamorous” and I look at least 10 years younger than this wealthy woman who appears to put a lot of energy and money into her appearance, but all in the wrong places.

When I was in high school, I could sit on my hair. It was very thick & stick-straight. I could braid it, or let it hang. I hung on to it because men rotating through my life liked long hair. I got over that silliness in my early thirties, when I had it cut to shoulder length. For the last fifteen years I’ve gone to a cranky though funny hairdresser who does her best to keep my hair under control. It’s fortunately still thick, & unfortunately still tangles very easily. She cuts & styles, & twice a year, perms my hair into a much more versatile style. I do have layers, & not all cut by Mayme. I have some breakage caused by the hardhat I’m required to wear at work. Several years ago, my sister convinced me that coloring my own hair was a mistake, & now I let my hairdresser do that, too. The first time she colored my hair, she asked, “You like being a red-head? What shade do you like?” I told her that I wanted to be a red that made other women look at me & think, “I bet she lies about her age, too.” I get a lot of compliments on my hair, & until they stop, I’m going to be a red-headed curly top.

I would really like to see the editors looks on this site who are constantly demeaning other women for their appearance. On one thread you insult these terrific looking women and on another you are pushing plastic surgery. How cynical. I hope someone creates a site for women over 40 who want to be positive and celebrate each other cause this one definately isnt it. Over and outta here.

I thought being a powerful woman is about doing what’s right for you with professional advice. If they are listening to their hair dresser - then they’ve made an educated decision. Donatella’s hair seems to be the least of her problems, and actually gives her a theatrical reverse Morticia kind of of look - very iconic.

oh pleez—these woman look beautiful—(except donnatella, who designs nice clothes but looks like she needs way less sun and plastic surgery) even if they are enhanced by a few extensions—personally i believe short hair makes women look older—each to her own—we don’t need any advise from the phat farm.
