Best-Dressed List | 01/12/2009 1:15 pm

Susan Sarandon, Glenn Close and Other 40+ Women Who Shined at the Globes

Photo Essay

Around the fashion world from Los Angeles to Beijing, there was a collective sigh of relief after the Golden Globes aired Sunday night. Going into the awards, retailers and designers were praying red carpet glamour would not become another victim of the Great Recession of 2009. “If it’s restraint and respect, well, hemlines won’t be the only things going down,” warned Vanessa Friedman, fashion correspondent of the Financial Times, prior to the awards. The glam factor, or lack thereof, would impact the fortunes of fashion houses and retailers either positively or negatively for the rest of the year. And happily, sackcloth was out, and long — if somewhat simple — glamour rocked the red carpet, not just on the very young stars like Blake Lively in Nina Ricci, but also on the 40+ set including Sandra Bullock and Kristin Scott Thomas, plus eight more stars whom we selected here for our 2009 Golden Globes Best-Dressed List.

Meryl Streep looks terrific! And, I would kill to get my hands on Glenn Close’s jacket…my kind of outfit!

Hi Bluegrass….Nice to have a very “lightweight” post here…..A minor discussion, as it were…..Ditto on your take with the costumes…..I phoned our mutual chum and she is, in fact, in the same place and would love to hear from you….I tried to persuade/convince her to sign on to wowOwow…I think she would just THRIVE here….I’m not interested in Facebook or anything that might not stay real anonymous…I don’t “go” anywhere but this site…..So I can either give you my P.O. Box or her mailing or e-mail address…..She said it was OK, but I am somewhat reluctant to do that to someone else….. What is protocol? BTW…she is off to England for a couple of weeks but says she is taking a laptop…… Please advise…….

If I could somehow get her email address, I would definitely re-connect with her. I wonder if she will remember me when I do manage to get hold of her.

Language rules change; in contemporary use “shined” is acceptable in place of shone.

I thought Glenn Close looked fabulous. I don’t know why some of the tabloid-y sites are saying she “missed” on the red carpet. Renee Zelweiger, on the other hand, looked like she’d just rolled out of bed, and not in a good way. That dress was a disaster.

Lorraine, If her bra had been black it might not have been so bad. She acted a little strange I thought. I’ve always loved her……….just a little disappointed in her appearance…….both clothing and behaviour.

I love, love, love Glen Close’s work but she looked like a “Flamer” Handler in the ring at Westminster. Ditto on Sarandon…cover ‘em up girlfriend.

Totally agree on Susan Sarandon. Don’t know if Glen Close looked like a “flamer” handler in the ring cuz I don’t know what that is, but I would never have put her on a best dressed list. I thought it looked as if the drycleaners had shrunk the legs of her slacks. As to Renne Z., she usually has impecable taste, but I thought that dress was way over-the-top. Does anyone want to talk about the way the men were groomed? When will that sloppy style end? I think there shoud be a rule against open shirts, loose ties, and uncombed hair for dress-up occasions. I was glad Kyra Sedgewick made the best dressed list. She looked fabulous but Kevin Baon looked terrible. I know he lost all his money recently and evidently he’s not eating. Nonetheless …

40-something here and feeling fine about my age. The 20s and 30s of Hollywood are beautiful, grown-up girls. However, it’s those in our 40s who seem to know who we are and where we fit in life. We wear jeans to Donna Karan on the outside and Sassybax underneath … both with confidence and no apologies. Here, here, to the press for growing up with us and giving kudos to the “aging beauties” of our time.

why am I starting to find evening wear hideous? most of the fashion photo essays I’ve seen on Wow make me go, GAK! Guess I just prefer the classic unstated look. All the gowns seem like they’re trying too hard.
