Marlo Thomas and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Photo Essay

In our house we weren’t allowed to take phone calls during dinner; but my father was allowed to break that rule if a call came in from St. Jude. And I’ll never forget when he came back to the table, he’d sometimes have tears in his eyes, because a little boy named David “didn’t make it.” Or he’d be beaming, because a little girl named Amy was “going home at last” … —Marlo Thomas

I have lived in Memphis for most of my life and have always thought of St Jude as the best of Memphis. I don’t know that I have ever been able to tell the story of St Jude to out of town guests without crying. The golden dome of your father’s final resting place is truly inspirational. My favorite story however is why the lights never go off on the top floor. The top floor is reserved for the most critically ill… the lights stay on to illuminate the stairway to heaven. As I said, the very best of Memphis.

Danny Thomas was a wonderful man beloved by his family and a great human being.  When he passed away I cried my eyes out.  He was a great family man and St. Jude is a charity I have given to all my adult life.  Marlo & family have continued to carry on and the wonderful work they do at St Jude has earned them all a plac ein Heavan.  I bet Danny is eating great tomatoe sauce in heavan for all his good deeds.  The slide show made me cry all over again.
