Gypsy in Venice

Piazza San Marco
Catherine Lebow Rosenberg, Johanna Alexander, Lourdes and Armando Valerio — part of our team in Venice to scout the Biennale — standing center stage in Piazza San Marco, an architectural wonderfulness that has been referred to as the best drawing room in Europe. It’s the place where everyone heads to first, to get that “I am really in Venice” feeling. There are more pigeons here than anywhere else in the world, I think, and they were all trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater so that, although they are hustlers, they are adorable hustlers and are part of that Italian scheme to make Italy the most charming country in the world.

Wonderful, thank you.

This was so wonderful to see .I have never realize how romantic Venice was. I could only wish that one day my Husband and I could go visit. Maybe I will get lucky to go to Venice on our 50th anniversary. Thank-You so much for sharing such a beautiful place………………Love Carol

Ahhhhh, my mother-land. Thanks for sharing. Wish I could be there. I would love to go.

Lovely …. Amazing …. I find it hard to believe that while I sit in Chicago, Illinois people are living that life at this very moment. I think I will take the next plane out. Oh, but who would take care of the animals?

Lady Gator - 5/2/2008 3:26 PM

Love it! When we were there about 3 years ago — it was very romantic!!

Nancy D - 5/2/2008 3:59 PM

What beauty, thank you for sharing!!!

Wendy Wilson - 5/2/2008 4:18 PM

Thank you, Mary. I really enjoyed seeing those photos. I was in Vinice many years ago and remember sitting in an out of the was cafe on the canal and eating for the first time black pasta with seafood sauce. We enjoyed that so much. Venice is a thrilling place to visit.

Mks me want to go back to Venice!

Mugsy Peabody - 5/2/2008 8:31 PM

Oh, no kidding. What ballsy, brassy characters they were to build La Serenisimo on a swamp! I loved the fornaci on Murano, the lace on Burano, the lovely taste of fresh coconut and lemonata, walking down to the Peggy Guggenheim to see the Pollacks…. Magical, mystical, the quiet, walking along the canals at night…. Heaven on earth.

Wow, Mary… how beautiful, thank you so much for sharing your travels with us, I can always use a little vicarious adventure :)

Frank Peterson - 5/2/2008 11:44 PM

Mary—gondolas—oh my oh my—sexy times? indeed lol That takes me back to lovely times when I was very young and so was she—thank you.

Frank Peterson - 5/2/2008 11:46 PM

And let me add—highly romantic, Venice.. If there ever were a city for lovers, except Paris, it’s Venice.

Mugsy Peabody - 5/3/2008 12:37 AM

One tip about Venice for those of us who aren’t wealthy, do what the Italians do and stay in Padova. It is 30 minutes by train from Venice, and much more affordable. It’s also a great city.

Suzanne de Cornelia - 5/3/2008 4:19 AM

Mary, Thank you so much for your delightful pix and always fresh narratives. Love the hats and necklace!

I don’t think Travel and Leisure’s ‘Best of World’ lists for 2008 are out yet, but was interesting that Italy has two cities on the top ten…..my city San Francisco is still hanging in there at #9…and Paris is gone!

And for those who need a Venice fix right now….can recommend One Thousand Days in Italy…American goes to Venice, finds love, sells her home/biz and moves there to marry him.

And Barbara Gruzziti Harrison’s ‘Italian Days’

A most fascinating American in Italy was the great Renaissance art historian, Bernard Berenson, who left his Florence villa, I Tatti, to Harvard. Like Mary Wells, who really knew how to live all the way up.

But I just want to go to Lake Como and get a glimpse of George Clooney….who has the great sense to live there.

Professor Michael Farrell leads tours to so many wonderful places and has been doing so for many years.
He is knowledgeable, bright and witty.
The site lists the scheduled tours for this season and includes photos from past tours.
I have my bias. He is a long time friend.
For those of you so inclined, I know you would enjoy every minute on any of his tours.
