Yes, Frank, a character that breaks your heart. I assume you have read the book–––Styron at his best. One of my all time favorite films is “The Deer Hunter”––Meryl’s performance along with everyone else’s is so perfect, so riveting! She is what we could call an actor’s actor. While she was studying at Yale here she performed in many of the plays at the Yale Repertory Theater.

Out Of Africa” will always be my favorite movie and my favorite Meryl Streep performance. It is a beautiful movie.

Does anyone remember the name of the mini-series she was in about Nazi Germany? She played a young girl. It was before Deer Hunter.

It must have been so hard to stop at ten. I’ve adored this woman for 30 years. Her roles in the Deer Hunter and Sophie’s Choice were probably my favorite. The scene in which Sophie chose is the most heartrending footage I’ve ever seen. Of those not chosen, the most deserving were her role as Karen Silkwood in Silkwood, and one of her very first roles, in Holocaust. Either of these should have trumped She Devil.

Definitely Sophie’s Chooice - that movie still haunts me. But I must say, She-Devil is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I was amazed and impressed at her performance in Mama Mia!

Sophie’s Choice tops it for me. Then Bridges, Prada, and She-Devil. She was so funny in She-Devil, who knew? I wish someone would write a really funny role for her that was intelligent, where she didn’t have to be brought down to talk about ear wax and her son’s penis.

Whenever she’s interviewed Meryl Streep is a bit shy, very funny, and obviously intelligent. Then she makes a film and her magic fills the screen. Sometimes it’s very subtle and disciplined (The Hours) and sometimes it’s exuberant (Mamma Mia), but it’s always absolutely, purely magical. My favorites are The French Lieutenant’s Woman, House of the Spirits, Out of Africa, Sophie’s Choice, The Bridges of Madison County, The Devil Wears Prada - what am I saying? If Meryl Streep recited the alphabet, I’d probably break down in tears or laugh my head off - depending on how she treated each letter.

Frank - yes, absolutely. I read the book before seeing the film and wasn’t disappointed for once in the movie version.

Yes Maurine—the screenplay by Harold Pinter was excellent—probably the only way the multiple endings could be handled— I’ve read the book many times since it first came out.
